Keisha Lance Bottoms has made history by winning the Georgia governor’s race, marking her as the first Black female governor elected in the United States. Her victory over Republican billionaire businessman Rick Jackson signifies a pivotal moment for Georgia, as it is the first time in over two decades that the state has elected a Democratic governor.
Bottoms’ win is emblematic of a broader success for the Democratic Party amid what has been described as one of the most contentious midterm elections in recent memory. The night not only solidified her position but also enabled the Democratic Party to claim total control of Congress, serving as a nationwide rebuke of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Strong Showings in Key Battlegrounds
The midterm elections saw Democratic Senate candidates secure significant victories in several battleground states. In Georgia, Jon Ossoff was re-elected, while in Texas, Democrat James Talarico successfully defeated Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton. In South Carolina, pediatrician Annie Andrews claimed the Senate seat, and Chris Pappas became the first openly gay male senator after his victory over Republican John Sununu in New Hampshire.
A Campaign Built on Local Concerns
Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor and advisor in the Biden administration, achieved her historic win despite facing a substantial financial disadvantage against Jackson, who invested tens of millions into his campaign. Her strategy focused on addressing pressing issues such as the rising cost of living and quality of life in Georgia. Throughout her campaign, she proposed significant tax reforms, including the elimination of sales tax on groceries, diapers, baby formula, and feminine hygiene products. Additionally, she sought to abolish the state income tax for public school teachers and eliminate taxes on car and homeowner’s insurance premiums and gas. Bottoms also pledged to expand Medicaid and temporarily halt the construction of new data centers in the state.
A Heartfelt Victory Speech
In her victory speech Tuesday night, Bottoms expressed her deep connection with the communities across Georgia. “Good evening, Georgia,” she began. “Over the last year and a half, we have traveled from the red hills of Georgia to the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Piedmont, from the coastal shores to rolling farmlands, from urban streets to rural communities, and with each stop, your faces, your families, your communities, your hopes and your dreams, and even your disappointments have been imprinted upon my heart. This campaign was about every community in every corner of Georgia. Georgia, this win is for all of us. Thank you, Georgia. I am honored to be your 84th governor.”
