Cher's Representative Defends Her After Michael Douglas's Oscar Remarks

Cher is gracefully addressing the recent comments made by Michael Douglas regarding her Oscar win for “Moonstruck” in 1988. A representative for the legendary actress and singer clarified Cher’s feelings towards Douglas, stating, “Cher adores Michael Douglas,” in response to his remark that has gone viral.

Douglas Reflects on the 1988 Oscars

Douglas, who starred alongside Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction,” expressed his ongoing disagreement with the Academy’s decision to award Cher the best actress Oscar that year. In a recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” with Close, Douglas noted, “She should have won [the Oscar] with ‘Fatal Attraction,’” highlighting that Close was nominated for her fourth Oscar at that time. When Norton pointed out Cher’s win, Douglas unceremoniously remarked, “I know, that’s what we all said!”

Close’s Response and the Award Show Context

Close interjected, urging Douglas to “be kind,” as laughter erupted from the studio audience. All three actors were nominated at the 60th Academy Awards, where Cher ultimately won for “Moonstruck” and Douglas claimed the best actor award for his performance in Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street.” While Cher’s film garnered six nominations, winning three Oscars, “Fatal Attraction” also received six nominations but went home empty-handed. Both films competed for the coveted best picture and best director awards, which ultimately went to “The Last Emperor” and Bernardo Bertolucci, respectively.

Glenn Close’s Legacy and Cher’s Recognition

As Douglas pointed out, Close entered the 1988 Oscars with a history of nominations, having been recognized previously as a best supporting actress for her roles in “The World According to Garp,” “The Big Chill,” and “The Natural.” “Fatal Attraction” marked her first nomination in the best actress category. Despite her impressive career, Close still has not secured a competitive Oscar victory, although she is set to receive an honorary award at the upcoming Governors Awards this month.

Cher’s Oscar triumph for “Moonstruck” was particularly noteworthy, as it followed her earlier nomination for best supporting actress for “Silkwood” in 1984, underscoring her significant contributions to film and entertainment.
