In a significant shift within the media landscape, Shirley Halperin will become co-editor-in-chief at Rolling Stone, marking a milestone as the first woman to hold this position in the magazine’s 60-year history. Meanwhile, Maer Roshan assumes the role of sole editor-in-chief at The Hollywood Reporter (THR). These prominent editorial changes highlight both publications’ commitment to dynamic leadership and evolving editorial directions.
Halperin’s New Role at Rolling Stone
Shirley Halperin, a seasoned music journalist, will lead Rolling Stone‘s music coverage alongside Sean Woods, who has been with the magazine for decades. Halperin will begin her role on September 1 as both co-editor-in-chief and head of music, splitting her time between New York and Los Angeles. Woods will continue to be based in New York. Together, they aim to steer the iconic magazine under the guidance of newly appointed CEO Julian Holguin.
Holguin expressed confidence in the new leadership team, stating, “Sean and Shirley are unmatched in their expertise and passion for storytelling, and their partnership will play a pivotal role in shaping Rolling Stone’s future.”
A Seasoned Career in Journalism
Halperin arrives at Rolling Stone with over two decades in music and entertainment journalism, previously holding key positions at Variety, Billboard, and Los Angeles Magazine. Her impactful 10-month tenure at THR was noted for reshaping the magazine’s music coverage.
Reflecting on her new role, Halperin remarked, “I’m very proud to help usher in the next era of the world’s most formidable music brand as its first female editor-in-chief.”
Roshan’s Leadership at The Hollywood Reporter
With Halperin’s departure, Maer Roshan steps up as the sole editor-in-chief at THR, where he will oversee a global team and direct editorial strategies across both print and digital platforms. Roshan joined THR in September 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a track record of expanding brands into new media territories.
Roshan acknowledged the opportunity at THR, stating, “We have a chance to innovate and expand this brand into new areas while preserving the journalistic excellence that has made THR the most respected entertainment industry publication in the world.”
Impact and Future Directions
During Roshan’s tenure, THR has expanded its video, audio, and social media assets, launching new initiatives that resonate with a modern audience. The publication has also been recognized with numerous awards under his leadership, including a National Magazine Award and several Emmy nominations.
Jerry Ruiz, THR’s business head, expressed gratitude for Halperin’s contributions and enthusiasm for the future, saying, “We’re very excited about this new thrilling phase of The Hollywood Reporter, led by Maer Roshan and his incredible team.”
These changes signal a transformative period for both Rolling Stone and THR, as they continue to lead and innovate in the ever-evolving media landscape.
