Pixar Elevates Jonathan Garson to President, Jim Morris Transitioning

Pixar Animation Studios is entering a new chapter as it announces a significant leadership transition. Jim Morris, who has dedicated 21 years to the studio—including 12 years as its president—will step into a role as president emeritus while Jonathan Garson is poised to take over as the new president, collaborating closely with Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter.

Leadership Transition and New Roles

As the new president, Garson will oversee all aspects of production and operations at Pixar. The studio is known for its groundbreaking animated films, most recently achieving success with the billion-dollar release of “Toy Story 5.” Two original projects, “Gatto” and “Ghost Market,” are on the horizon, and Garson will manage the team of producers, department heads, and post-production processes. Meanwhile, Morris will continue as an executive producer for the eagerly anticipated “Incredibles 3,” set to hit theaters in June 2028, while also focusing on talent development and mentoring across both Pixar and Walt Disney Studios.

Effective Date and Leadership Acknowledgments

The leadership changes, announced by Alan Bergman, chairman of Disney Entertainment and Studios, will take effect on January 4, 2027. Bergman expressed profound respect for Morris, saying, “Having worked closely with Jim Morris for more than 20 years, I have enormous respect for his leadership and unwavering commitment to Pixar and its people… This transition will ensure a smooth succession for the team.”

Bergman also praised Garson’s leadership qualities, noting his strong understanding of what makes Pixar unique and how to bring its storytelling to life. “Pete Docter and I are excited for him to step into this role,” he said.

New Executive Roles

In addition to the changes at the presidential level, Jonas Rivera will take on an expanded role as creative executive vice president, where he will lead filmmakers and development in close collaboration with Garson and Docter. Bergman acknowledged Rivera’s extensive creative expertise, stating, “Jonas Rivera brings a wealth of creative expertise that will serve the team well as he works even more closely with Pete.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Morris joined Pixar in 2005 after his tenure at Lucasfilm and ILM, where he played a key role in visual effects for landmark films. He became president in 2014 after succeeding the legendary Ed Catmull. Under his leadership, Pixar’s films have grossed over $12 billion at the global box office, maintaining a heritage of critical acclaim and cultural significance.

Reflecting on his time at the studio, Morris remarked, “Leading Pixar has been the privilege of a lifetime… I’m thrilled to move into handling a number of special projects,” while expressing confidence in Garson’s ability to carry on Pixar’s legacy, describing him as “a Pixar person through and through.”

Garson’s Journey at Pixar

Garson, who has been a part of Disney for over 30 years and joined Pixar in 2010, has been integral to the studio’s operations, most recently serving as its general manager and previously leading marketing and franchise efforts. He fondly recalled his early experiences: “I still remember seeing ‘Toy Story’ for the first time… Every day I walk in the door here, I’m reminded just how special this place is.”

Garson expressed gratitude toward Morris, saying, “Jim has shown me what it looks like to safeguard this culture of quality, innovation, and creative ambition… I look forward to working with Pete, Jonas, and all of the extraordinary talent here at Pixar as we continue to push boundaries and lead our studio into the future.”

Rivera’s Expanding Influence

Rivera, whose connection with Pixar dates back to 1994, has been an influential figure in almost every major release from the studio, having won Oscars for “Inside Out” and “Toy Story 4.” He shared his excitement about the new responsibilities, stating, “I am deeply honored to step into this new role alongside Pete, partnering with him and Jonathan…” He also acknowledged Morris as an extraordinary mentor and leader.

As Pixar looks toward the future, the leadership changes signal a commitment to continuing its legacy of innovation and excellence in animated storytelling.
