Neil Young Quits Facebook Citing AI Policy Concerns for Kids

Neil Young has decided to sever his ties with Facebook, taking a firm stance against what he describes as “unconscionable” AI chatbot policies. This move comes in response to a Reuters report unveiling Facebook’s internal approaches to AI interactions with children, sparking concerns over ethical practices. Young’s decision not only highlights his advocacy for digital responsibility but also emphasizes the ongoing debate around AI technology and child safety.

Neil Young’s Facebook Exit

The legendary musician has chosen to make his official Facebook page inactive. Administrators confirmed this on Thursday, pointing to a Reuters report that revealed Meta‘s AI chatbot policies. According to the report, these policies allow chatbots to engage in conversations with children that could be considered sensitive or inappropriate.

A post on Young’s Facebook declared, “At Neil Young’s request, we are no longer using Facebook for any Neil Young related activities. Meta’s use of chatbots with children is unconscionable. Mr. Young does not want a further connection with FACEBOOK.”

Controversial AI Policies

The Reuters report disclosed internal documents from Meta that raised alarms. These documents outlined the conditions under which AI chatbots could interact with children, including examples deemed acceptable or questionable. A particularly troubling element of the report noted that describing a child in a manner that suggests attractiveness was considered permissible, although describing a child under 13 as sexually desirable was not.

Meta responded by stating, “The examples and notes in question were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies, and have been removed.” They emphasized that their policies strictly prohibit any form of content that sexualizes children.

Meta’s Defense

A spokesperson for Meta reiterated to the media, including The Hollywood Reporter, that the company has clear policies to prevent harmful interactions involving AI. Despite this, the existence of such examples in their internal documents shows the complexities of navigating ethical AI use.

Meta explained that while their policies are firm, the diverse range of hypothetical scenarios explored by teams may lead to content that contradicts official guidelines. They assured that such discrepancies have been corrected.

Young’s History of Activism

This is not the first time Neil Young has acted on his ethical concerns regarding technology. In 2022, he famously left Spotify due to misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines broadcasted on The Joe Rogan Experience. Young’s letter at the time urged other artists and companies to reconsider their support for Spotify.

Eventually, Young returned to Spotify as other platforms began featuring Rogan’s show. His actions continue to reflect his commitment to standing up against policies he deems harmful, keeping the discussion on digital ethics and responsibility alive.
