In an unprecedented move for Vietnamese cinema, the whodunit film “Karaoke Murder” (Vietnamese title: “Án Mạng Karaoke”) is set to premiere simultaneously in cinemas across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. This milestone marking the film’s global launch is a groundbreaking achievement for the Vietnamese film industry.
Worldwide Release on Halloween Weekend
The film is scheduled to debut in Vietnam on October 30 and will also be released by U.S.-based 3388 Films in Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand over the same weekend, perfectly timed for Halloween. 3388 Films holds exclusive international distribution rights in these regions, as well as in Japan and Taiwan.
A Story Rooted in Vietnamese Culture
Directed by Hoang Le in his feature debut, “Karaoke Murder” features a creative direction from veteran producer Vo Thanh Hoa of 89s Group, alongside producer Mai Bao Ngoc. The film stars an ensemble cast including Doan Thien An, Thanh Son, Dai Nghia, and others, promising an engaging storyline set against the backdrop of a mountain pilgrimage. As a former journalist rekindles her investigative instincts to solve the murder of a karaoke-loving tycoon under suspicious circumstances, tension rises as the group finds themselves isolated from the outside world.
Significance of the International Release
Thien A. Pham, founder of 3388 Films, emphasized the importance of coordinating local and international releases to create a unified global presence. “Aligning an international release with a film’s local date is a significant breakthrough moment,” Pham stated. He articulated a vision of generating greater momentum for international films through synchronized release dates, a goal that has now been realized through “Karaoke Murder.”
Karaoke as a Cultural Touchstone
The producers crafted the film’s narrative around karaoke, a beloved activity in Vietnamese culture. It plays an integral role in celebrations, and while it can incite neighborhood disputes—often resulting in tragic outcomes—the film aims to highlight this cultural phenomenon with both humor and gravity. Vo Thanh Hoa expressed a sentiment of gratitude, stating, “We make films for Vietnamese audiences before anyone else,” but also hopes to bridge connections with international viewers.
Bolstering Vietnamese Cinema’s Global Presence
Vo further noted that the success of 89s Group, with films grossing over VND600 billion ($23 million) at the Vietnamese box office between 2023 and 2026, has positioned them to present authentic Vietnamese stories to a global audience. “I hope the Vietnamese diaspora will feel a little piece of home when they watch ‘Karaoke Murder,’” he added, expressing hope that the film will pique international curiosity about Vietnamese cinema.
A Track Record of Asian Content
With over two decades of experience in distributing Asian films, 3388 Films has made a name for itself, notably with “Mai,” the first Vietnamese film to exceed $2 million at the North American and European box office. The company is set on redefining the possibilities for Asian cinema on the world stage, and “Karaoke Murder” is poised to be a strong contender in this endeavor.
