Inside the Controversial Shower Scene: Insights from Holmes' Partner

If you haven’t yet seen You Can See Everything, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary on the notorious Elizabeth Holmes, you may want to hit pause on this article, close the tab, and head to the nearest theater. Spoilers abound ahead!

In a recent “Ask Me Anything” session on X, Billy Evans, Holmes’ partner in both business and life, opened up to fans for the first time since the documentary’s release last month. In a post that simply stated “AMA,” Evans humorously added a caveat: “Needs to be legally permissible.”

As the AMA progressed, Evans appeared candid, addressing a range of questions that spanned both the documentary and various everyday topics. However, it is essential to note that Evans emerges as a particularly compelling figure within the film, which itself is filled with complex personalities. The documentary raises intriguing questions about Evans’ role in Holmes’ life: Is he her controlling Svengali or merely another ambitious figure being drawn into her sphere? Or perhaps they are simply two individuals uniquely suited to each other.

Highlights from Evans’ AMA

During the AMA, one of Evans’ most distinguishing statements addressed the common misconception that he controls Holmes. He emphatically stated, “Anyone who actually knows her would find that idea hilarious. She’s fiercely independent, strong-willed, and my best friend. We are partners in every sense.” Additionally, he assured that he would face severe consequences from Holmes’ friends if he ever mistreated her.

In a moment that drew parallels to a key conversation between David Fielder and Holmes in the documentary, a user asked Evans, “Have you ever told a lie?” In a stark contrast to Holmes’ answer of “no,” Evans simply replied, “Yes.”

Evans expressed that he has no regrets about his involvement in You Can See Everything. When questioned about his noticeable sniffing in the film, which some speculated might indicate drug use, he clarified that it was due to allergies and colds contracted from his children. In reference to a controversial early scene where he appears naked in the shower, Evans dismissed claims that it could only have occurred with his consent, labeling it a “false narrative” and referencing an article from People which reported that Evans felt “violated” by that scene.

Clarifications on Power of Attorney

Another significant topic addressed was his power of attorney over Holmes and the use of her X account to tweet on her behalf. He stated that “Holmes knew exactly what we were doing” and explained that the power of attorney was a legal necessity while she is incarcerated, asserting that it wasn’t a substitute for her consent.

Evans also took the opportunity to clarify doubts regarding a scene in which Holmes claimed she was not being compensated for participating in the film. Evans noted that he had struck a deal for a cut of the documentary’s profits during a meeting at a friend’s single-story house—“All you need to know,” he joked. Ultimately, both he and Holmes chose to forgo their share of the film’s profits before its release.

Despite the serious nature of some of the AMA questions, Evans also engaged in lighthearted banter. He humorously remarked that the hardest part of filming was remembering his lines and expressed his preference for dogs, while admiring the independence of cats. His favorite films include The Fall, Alien, The Great Dictator, and Primer. When asked about his favorite pop diva, he praised Chappell Roan and mentioned that he purchased engagement ring merchandise during a Taylor Swift concert, stating, “Aretha Franklin has the best voice.”

With its blend of serious discussions and lighthearted exchanges, Evans’ AMA offered a fascinating glimpse into his perspective on life with Elizabeth Holmes, along with their shared journey through the complex world depicted in You Can See Everything.
