A captivating new chapter in Indonesian cinema is unfolding as the trailer for “Sleep No More,” a Berlin-bound horror film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Edwin, makes its debut. Known for his unique storytelling, Edwin crafts a chilling narrative that delves into themes of sleep deprivation and labor exploitation.
Haunting Narrative and Themes
Indonesian horror “Sleep No More,” or “Monster Pabrik Rambut” in its native language, offers a fusion of social realism and genre horror. Set within a factory, the story explores the harrowing conditions faced by workers pushed to their limits. The film portrays Putri and Ida, two laborers whose lives spiral into chaos as a mysterious presence begins to haunt those denied rest. As fatigue erodes their reality, the line between life and possession blurs, forcing a confrontation with both a supernatural menace and a relentless, sleepless system.
Edwin’s Artistic Vision
Directed by Locarno winner Edwin, “Sleep No More” continues his tradition of blending bold genres. His previous works include “Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly,” and “Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash,” earning him international acclaim. Edwin merges horror with dark comedy and surreal fantasy, tackling issues of labor exploitation. “People are expected to grow body parts in order to survive long hours of slavery,” Edwin claims, emphasizing the film’s reflection of harsh realities through horror.
Global Collaboration
The film represents a significant international effort, involving co-production partners from Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Germany, and France. Palari Films, alongside Beacon Film of Indonesia, spearheads the production with partners such as Singapore’s Giraffe Pictures, Japan’s Hassaku Labs, Germany’s In Good Company, and France’s Apsara Films. Producers Meiske Taurisia and Muhammad Zaidy lead the project, with a team of co-producers that includes Anthony Chen and Atsuko Ohno. Worldwide sales are managed by South Korea’s Showbox, indicating the film’s anticipated global reach.
