Hollywood Stars Flock to Pope Leo's Exclusive Gathering

Pope Leo, known for his innovative approach to leadership, is orchestrating a unique convergence of faith and film at the Vatican. The Hollywood gathering, featuring Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, and other top talents, aims to deepen dialogue between the Catholic Church and the cinematic world. This special event highlights Pope Leo’s commitment to engaging with diverse cultural spheres, fostering understanding, and promoting shared human values.

The Chicago-born pontiff, notable as the first U.S. pope, will host a special audience at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace on Saturday morning. The event will attract an impressive lineup of stars, including Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Viggo Mortensen, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, and Monica Bellucci, as announced by the Vatican.

Alongside these actors, Oscar-winning directors Spike Lee, George Miller, Giuseppe Tornatore, and Gus Van Sant are expected to attend. Organized by the Vatican’s culture office, this gathering forms part of the Holy Year celebrations, reiterating the Catholic Church’s dedication to embracing the arts. The Vatican explained that the pope wishes to “deepen dialogue with the World of Cinema… exploring the possibilities that artistic creativity offers to the mission of the Church and the promotion of human values.”

In demonstrating his connection with Hollywood, Pope Leo revealed four of his favorite films: Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), Robert Wise’s “The Sound of Music” (1965), Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People” (1980), and Roberto Benigni’s “Life Is Beautiful” (1997). This personal touch underscores his appreciation of cinema’s influence in conveying meaningful narratives.

No recent memory recalls a Vatican event quite like this, although the late Pope Francis did host a gathering for comedians in June 2024, featuring U.S. late-night hosts like Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon.

This announcement follows Pope Leo’s meeting with Robert De Niro and his children at the Vatican last week. During his visit to Rome, De Niro received the Lupa Capitolina, the city’s highest honor, and attended the inauguration of his Nobu Hotel Roma on Via Veneto.

In June, Al Pacino also had an audience with Pope Leo, marking the first reported meeting between an American pope and a Hollywood legend. Such engagements reflect Pope Leo’s ongoing efforts to bridge gaps between religious and cultural communities.
