'Forelock' Gains Global Distribution with Mise En Scene Partnership

“Forelock,” a dark comedy captivatingly led by David Krumholtz and Caleb Alexander Smith, has been picked up for worldwide sales by The Mise En Scene Company. With Smith taking on his first solo directorial project, the film promises an intriguing take on the mishaps of Hollywood dreams.

Plot and Cast Details

Set in Los Angeles, “Forelock” tells the story of a wannabe fitness trainer, portrayed by Smith, who unwittingly teams up with a Hollywood con artist, played by Krumholtz. Their alliance quickly ventures into criminal endeavors, offering a satirical glance at the often elusive Hollywood aspirations.

This project marks a significant moment for Krumholtz following his praised role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Known for working with renowned filmmakers like the Coen Brothers and appearing in Seth Rogen’s Emmy-nominated series on Apple TV+, Krumholtz continues to expand his dynamic career with “Forelock.”

Creative Talent and Production Insights

Smith, with credits in popular TV series like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Modern Family,” brings his experience and novel vision to this directorial venture. Alongside Smith and Krumholtz, the film features Emily Swallow from “The Mandalorian” and Chloe Farnworth, known for her role in A24’s “MaXXXine.”

“Forelock” is the first production from Midnight Chimes, founded by Lindsay McCormick and Smith. With Russ Hammonds as a producer and Krumholtz as an executive producer, the film showcases the collaborative spirit of independent cinema.

Strategic Acquisition and Industry Impact

The acquisition by Mise En Scene represents a strategic move for the company, which is carving out its place as a formidable player in global film sales. Paul Yates, CEO, shared his enthusiasm: “This film restores your faith in the future of cinema.”

Lindsay McCormick lauded Mise En Scene’s approach, noting, “MSC stood out for their taste and pristine track record. ‘Forelock’ defies conventional production frameworks, establishing itself as an auteur-driven work with broad appeal.”

Production Challenges and Future Prospects

Filmed entirely on location in Los Angeles, with cinematographer Roberto Schaefer and gaffer Jim Plannette, “Forelock” was among the first films resuming production post-2023 industry strikes. McCormick highlighted, “We wanted the movie to explore LA’s contradictions, serving as a love letter to the city.”

The film’s world premiere is eagerly anticipated at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Mise En Scene will introduce it to global buyers.
