Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has taken the anime world by storm, delivering a record-breaking $33 million on its opening day across 3,315 locations. This staggering debut not only marks the largest opening day for an anime film but also the biggest opening weekend, eclipsing previous records held by well-known titles. With widespread enthusiasm and favorable reviews, “Infinity Castle” is setting new benchmarks in both domestic and global markets, underscoring the enduring appeal of this beloved anime series.
The Unprecedented Success of ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’
“Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” has catapulted to an unprecedented success, shattering records with its $33 million opening day, a remarkable feat in anime history. Previously, “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” held the record for an anime opening day at $10.9 million in 2022. Further adding to its triumph, “Infinity Castle” claimed the title for the biggest opening weekend, surpassing the long-held $31 million record by “Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back” from 1998.
The film, available in both subtitled and dubbed formats and enjoying a boost from Imax screenings, has drawn praise for its captivating storyline and animation. Audience feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, earning an “A” grade from Cinema Score. Internationally, the film has amassed more than $279 million, with a significant portion from Japan, where it remains dominant at the box office for over eight weeks.
Sony and Crunchyroll’s Remarkable Achievement
Under Sony’s anime banner Crunchyroll, this achievement represents a significant milestone in North America. Building on the success of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train,” which earned $20 million at its 2021 opening, “Infinity Castle” has more than doubled expectations, signalling a promising September for the industry. This success comes at a crucial time for Sony, following a quieter blockbuster season.
Anime films often experience front-loaded success with fans flocking to early screenings, setting high expectations for the remaining weekend. Estimates suggest the weekend gross could reach upwards of $56 million, with some projections even exceeding $60 million, marking it as Sony’s largest domestic opener since last year’s “Venom: The Last Dance.”
A Competitive Box Office Weekend
While “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” captured headlines, other releases made their mark. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” secured the third spot, generating $8.8 million from 3,694 sites, with projections aiming for $19.5 million. Celebrating the series’ transition to the big screen, this continuation has delighted fans, earning a strong “A” on Cinema Score.
Lionsgate’s “The Long Walk,” directed by Francis Lawrence, opened in fourth place with an initial $4.76 million, aiming for an $11 million debut against its modest $20 million budget. Though reviews are favorable, audience response has been mixed, with a “B” Cinema Score grade.
In second place, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” added $8.2 million to its collection, despite a 68% drop from last week. With $113 million already accrued, it’s one of the year’s top earners after just eight days.
Additional Films in the Spotlight
The Disney re-release of “Toy Story,” celebrating its 30th anniversary, earned $1.1 million and rounds out the top five. Meanwhile, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” a sequel to the 1984 classic, made $820,000 from 1,919 locations, aiming to crack the top 10.
The film unites director Rob Reiner with the original comedic cast for a fun parody of modern rock tours. While generally well-received, it garnered an “A-” Cinema Score, reflecting a warm reception from its target audience.
