Mark Hamill Considered Quitting Acting Before 'The Long Walk'

Mark Hamill Almost Retired From Acting Before ‘The Long Walk’ introduces a fascinating chapter in the acclaimed actor’s career, revealing why the beloved Star Wars icon nearly stepped away from the spotlight. Delving into his role in Stephen King‘s adaptation, the article uncovers the motivations behind Hamill’s decision to continue acting and the impact of his collaboration with filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Join us as we explore this turning point and its significance in Hamill’s storied career.

The buzz around “The Long Walk” intensified at San Diego Comic-Con with the premiere of its first 22 minutes. Alongside a new red-band trailer, the event featured a lively panel including cast members Mark Hamill, David Jonsson, Tut Nyuot, and Garrett Wareing.

Adapted from Stephen King’s 1979 novel, “The Long Walk” is set in a dystopian America where young men participate in a deadly contest under the watchful eye of a character known only as the Major. Hamill, reflecting on his own experiences near a U.S. military base in Japan, brought authenticity to this role. “I know who this guy is: I’ve seen him firsthand,” Hamill shared during the panel.

This role is part of a darker portfolio for Hamill, contrasting with his iconic portrayal of Luke Skywalker. Around 2019, Hamill contemplated retirement, feeling unmotivated to continue with on-camera roles. “I thought this stage in my career, I’d be spending more time with a metal detector, wandering around the beach,” he confessed. Yet, his agent and wife encouraged him to reconsider.

The turning point came with his casting by Mike Flanagan in “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Portraying complex characters, Hamill found a renewed passion. “What a turnaround!” he exclaimed, delighting in the unexpected busyness of his schedule.

Screenwriter JT Mollner discussed the importance of preserving the profound themes of King’s novel. “We so wanted to make sure we had the beauty and love in the story of friendship — and also the brutality, hopelessness and terror,” he said.

Although the panel sidestepped direct comparisons to current political climates, director Francis Lawrence and actor Ben Wang highlighted the filming’s intense physical demands, which fostered camaraderie among the cast. Filming chronologically, they walked up to 30,000 steps a day, forging genuine bonds along the way.

Fans at the panel were treated to an unexpected preview of the film’s opening.
