Bob Chapek, who faced a tumultuous tenure as Disney‘s chief executive, is preparing to share his narrative through a memoir. Titled “Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth,” the book promises to unveil the complexities and challenges he encountered during his brief leadership from 2020 to 2022.
Inside Chapek’s Memoir
The memoir, spanning 272 pages, will be published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books and is set for release on September 29, 2026. According to the publisher, the book will provide a rare glimpse into the high-stakes maneuvers that took place within Disney during Chapek’s appointment and subsequent dismissal.
The Rise and Fall of a Disney Visionary
Chapek took the helm as Disney CEO in February 2020, selected as Bob Iger’s successor. However, his leadership was cut short in November 2022 when the Disney board voted to oust him amidst a series of controversial decisions, ultimately bringing Iger back into the role. As of March 2023, Iger stepped down again, making way for former parks head Josh D’Amaro to take over.
Reflections on a Challenging Era
After a period of reflection, Chapek offers insight into the inner workings of one of the most iconic companies in the world. Gallery Books describes the memoir as “a revealing and thrilling story of ambition, power, and the price of Disney magic.”
Navigating Unprecedented Challenges
The challenges Chapek faced began almost immediately after his appointment, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced park closures and shut down movie theaters and cruises. This created an extraordinary environment for decision-making, marked by high stakes and considerable backlash. In his memoir, Chapek reflects on the possibility that he may have been used as a scapegoat for the misfortunes that befell Disney during this chaotic time.
Board’s Perspective on Leadership Changes
According to a 2023 regulatory filing, Disney’s board determined that Chapek was no longer the right leader for the company following his contract renewal in June 2022. Economic factors and changes in the industry’s landscape influenced the board’s decision, ultimately leading to Iger’s return as CEO during a period of significant transformation for Disney.
Chapek’s Journey and Background
The memoir also delves into Chapek’s upbringing in small-town Indiana, where he was raised by his mother and a father who served in World War II. The experiences of his childhood instilled in him values such as hard work, resilience, and determination. Starting his journey with Disney in 1993 as the marketing director for home entertainment, Chapek rose through the ranks to hold significant positions, including president of Disney Consumer Products and chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products.
Variety has reached out to Disney for comment on Chapek’s upcoming memoir.
