Zarrar Kahn, known for his debut feature “In Flames,” which premiered at Cannes and later screened at Toronto, is making a delightful return to the festival’s Short Cuts lineup with his latest film, a romantic comedy titled “The Lion Does Not Concern Himself.” Recently, a trailer for the film was unveiled, offering a glimpse into this engaging narrative.
A Unique Love Story
The film centers around a charming gym coach who believes that his identity as a toxic podcaster is his sole pathway to cultural relevance. His life takes an unexpected turn when a new client enters his world, transitioning from a mere acquaintance to a romantic interest. The story originates from the imagination of Toronto-based writer and lead actor Mohammad Ali Hashmi, a frequent collaborator with Kahn. Hashmi was inspired by the pervasive incel culture he observed in the gym environment and how easily a regular gym-goer could slip into the role of an Andrew Tate admirer.
Reframing Male Isolation
Kahn was intrigued by these themes but opted to present the familiar landscape of male frustration and online separation through the lens of a classic rom-com. The film’s title, taken from a quote in “Game of Thrones” that has gained traction on TikTok, serves as a playful nod to the “manosphere” and its inherent capacity for self-deprecation.
Director’s Insight
In a director’s statement, Kahn described the film as “sort of about the manosphere, sort of about the gender divide, and sort of about the inherent goofiness of falling in love.” This exploration of modern relationships is layered with humor and social commentary.
Production Details
Kahn took on multiple roles in the film, directing, co-writing, and co-editing the project, which was filmed at a gym located on Queen West in Toronto. The project is produced by Lauren Saarimaki of POV Film, with Mina Husain of Suno Studios serving as executive producer. CityLights Media is responsible for world sales and festival distribution, also backing Kahn’s upcoming climate thriller “Suffering Is Optional,” set to star “Ms. Marvel” breakout Iman Vellani and begin production in early 2027.
