Stephen Wilson Jr. shines a light on the working class with his new song “Gary,” celebrating those who tackle challenges head-on. Known for blending grunge and heartland rock, Wilson brings authenticity to his storytelling. His latest track pays homage to the unsung heroes who fix, build, and maintain the backbone of society. In this article, we’ll explore the themes and inspirations behind “Gary” and how Wilson is set to honor these everyday legends through both his music and an upcoming tour.
Earlier this year, Stephen Wilson Jr. previewed his latest track, “Gary,” during a sold-out event at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl. Following the performance, he delved into the song’s significance in a detailed conversation with Rolling Stone. The song, encapsulating his unique mix of grunge and heartland rock, was officially released early Wednesday morning.
The Story Behind “Gary”
Wilson’s background heavily influences the heartfelt narrative of “Gary.” “I grew up in a body shop,” he shared with Rolling Stone. “My family, every one of them can fix anything, not because they’re just like these mechanical geniuses, but because they just had to fix everything. There’s no money to hire somebody to fix something, so you just got to learn how to fix it. And where I come from, the Garys, they get it done. It’s like, ‘Man, you’re gonna need to call Gary.’”
Debut and Impact
The live debut of “Gary” captivated audiences on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night. The song is now available across streaming platforms. “Gary” serves as the lead single from Wilson’s upcoming album, a continuation of the praised 2023 release, Son of Dad.
In “Gary,” Wilson sings, “Time leaves town but the minute hand stays/Ain’t a lot of boys named Gary these days,” reflecting on a time when grit and hands-on skills were more celebrated.
A Call to Recognize and Celebrate
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Wilson reflected on societal shifts: “I grew up in a generation where it’s like you go to college and to hell with trades. But here we are in society that’s running out of Garys. And it’s going to be scary if we ain’t got our Garys. I hope we recognize and start celebrating them instead of forgetting about them.”
Upcoming Tour and Performances
Wilson is gearing up for his Gary the Torch tour, launching March 6 in Columbus, Ohio. The tour will visit major cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. Before the tour, Wilson will finish 2025 with performances in Las Vegas and two shows at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
The Indiana native is also set to perform at the 2025 CMA Awards in Nashville on Wednesday night. His performance will feature a reimagined version of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me” and a collaboration with Shaboozey on their track “Took a Walk.” Wilson is in the running for New Artist of the Year.
