Stephen Colbert Joins Peter Jackson for Exciting New Film Collaboration

Renowned for his deep appreciation of Tolkien’s universe, Stephen Colbert is set to embark on an exciting new journey: writing a movie for acclaimed director Peter Jackson. Enthusiasm is building as fans of Middle-earth anticipate Colbert’s contribution to this beloved world. Colbert, known for his ability to quote Tolkien’s works extensively, will bring his passion to script development in a highly anticipated addition to the franchise.

The New Project Takes Shape

Colbert has been enlisted to script the second installment of two forthcoming films in the blockbuster series. Collaborating with his son Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens, Colbert will work on The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past (a working title). This film will serve as a sequel to Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum.

The synopsis of Shadow of the Past places the narrative 14 years after Frodo’s departure, centering on Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their initial adventure. Teasers suggest a compelling plot: Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a secret that nearly altered the outcome of the War of the Ring.

A Revelation from Warner Bros. and Peter Jackson

Warner Bros. announced the project on Tuesday with a thrilling video featuring director Peter Jackson, who helmed both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Jackson hinted at a “very special partner” before revealing the collaborator as none other than Stephen Colbert, adding an exciting dimension to this cinematic endeavor.

Colbert stated that the film would explore early chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that were not depicted in Jackson’s original 2001 adaptation. “The thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in The Fellowship [of the Ring] that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day,” he noted. His vision includes chapters such as ‘Three is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs’, contemplating whether they could be woven into a standalone story aligned with both the books and Jackson’s films.

Bringing the Vision to Life

After discussing ideas with his screenwriter son Peter, Colbert devised a narrative framework for the project. Despite initial hesitance, his courage led him to propose the idea to Jackson two years ago. Enthusiastically received, Jackson joined forces with Colbert and Boyens to refine the script.

Amid concerns about balancing his hosting duties with the film’s demands, Colbert mentioned, “it turns out I’m going to be free starting this summer.” CBS announced last July that The Late Show, which Colbert has hosted for nearly a decade, will end in May 2026. This new opportunity fills him with excitement as he prepares to transition from television to the realm of Middle-earth.

Addressing fans before signing off the announcement call, Colbert quipped, “So if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to finish the television show and I’ve got to write a movie script, but I will see you all in the Shire.” With his blend of humor and passion, Stephen Colbert is sure to offer a fresh perspective on Tolkien’s legendary world.
