In an exciting development for horror enthusiasts, Shudder has acquired two prominent Indonesian horror films, “Pabrik Gula” and “Perewangan,” from EST N8. This strategic move enhances Shudder’s catalog, bringing these thrilling titles to audiences in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Known for their unique storytelling and cultural depth, these films are set to captivate horror fans worldwide.
Return of a Celebrated Director
The acquisition marks the return of director Awi Suryadi to international screens. Suryadi, who previously captivated audiences with “KKN di Desa Penari,” Indonesia’s highest-grossing horror film, continues to make waves in the genre. His distinctive storytelling and masterful direction are anticipated to resonate with global audiences through these latest projects.
Exploring Cultural Horror Narratives
“Pabrik Gula” draws on Indonesia’s rich folklore, seamlessly blending historical elements from the Dutch colonial era with modern horror themes. The film has been a massive hit, attracting over 4.7 million viewers domestically. On the other hand, “Perewangan” explores Javanese spiritual beliefs, delving into the darker aspects of entities promising material gains. Both films are a testament to Indonesia’s vibrant horror scene.
Broader International Success
The films have already garnered significant traction across various markets. “Pabrik Gula” made a remarkable impression during its Vietnamese release and has set new standards for Indonesian horror internationally. EST N8 successfully extended the titles’ reach to Asia-Pacific territories, as well as Latin America and Southeast Asia, highlighting their universal appeal.
Strengthening Global Collaborations
EST N8’s Tenten Wei, Sophie Shi, Cathy Ni, and Aaron Chang spearheaded the deal ahead of the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market. CEO Jaeson Ma expressed the company’s mission of uniting Eastern and Western audiences, emphasizing that these films showcase Southeast Asian cultural horror at its finest. Co-founder Kris Eiamsakulrat celebrated the milestone, noting, “What’s local is universal – I’m excited for Shudder’s audience to connect with Awi Suryadi’s culturally rooted horror.”
