Salaud Morisset Joins 'Silent Rebellion' for Venice Debut Release

Swiss director Marie-Elsa Sgualdo’s debut feature film, Silent Rebellion, has made headlines as it prepares for its world premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival. Acquired by international sales agent Salaud Morisset, the film, also known by its French title, À bras-le-corps, explores bold themes of self-determination and societal challenges. Ahead of this significant milestone, Variety has shared an exclusive first look, adding to the anticipation surrounding this compelling narrative.

The Story of Silent Rebellion

Silent Rebellion centers on a powerful tale of resilience and empowerment. It follows 15-year-old Emma, who faces unimaginable challenges after becoming pregnant due to rape. Set against the rigid backdrop of a rural Protestant community, Emma’s journey is one of transformation and defiance. Her struggle is not only a personal one but also highlights broader societal hypocrisies, particularly in the shadow of World War II. By choosing her path, Emma becomes a symbol of courage and change.

A Feminist Perspective on History

Salaud Morisset remarked on the significance of Silent Rebellion within a growing movement of women filmmakers who revisit historical narratives with a feminist lens. This film aims to shed light on women’s experiences that historical accounts have often neglected. This approach aligns with contemporary trends in cinema where female directors re-evaluate 20th-century events, offering fresh, impactful stories.

Collaborative Success and Artistic Vision

This is not the first collaboration between Salaud Morisset and Sgualdo; they previously worked together on the short film “You Can’t Do Everything at Once, But You Can Leave Everything at Once,” which was featured at Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Francois Morisset commented on the profound impact of Silent Rebellion, praising Lila Gueneau’s portrayal of Emma. He noted that the film resonates with modern issues and emphasizes youth’s indomitable spirit and the cost of emancipation.

Production and Distribution

Produced by Elena Tatti and Nicolas Wittwer for Box Productions, Silent Rebellion is a co-production involving Belgian, French, and Swiss partners, including Hélicotronc and RTS – Radio Télévision Suisse. The film has received support from notable entities such as Eurimages and the Federal Office of Culture. Distribution within Switzerland will be handled by Outside the Box, ensuring that this remarkable tale reaches a broad audience.

With the buzz building around its Venice debut, Silent Rebellion stands poised to make a significant impact, marking a fresh, insightful entry into the realm of international cinema.
