MoreThan Films Acquires Sophy Romvari’s Locarno Entry ‘Blue Heron’

Renowned for spotlighting emerging filmmakers, MoreThan Films has secured the rights to Sophy Romvari’s debut feature, “Blue Heron.” Set to premiere at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival in the Filmmakers of the Present category, this acquisition marks a significant milestone for the film, enhancing its anticipation among global audiences. Embracing themes of immigration and personal transformation, “Blue Heron” is primed for success on the international stage.

The Story Behind ‘Blue Heron’

Set in the late 1990s, “Blue Heron” centers on an eight-year-old girl named Sasha and her Hungarian immigrant family as they begin anew on Vancouver Island, Canada. Their pursuit of a fresh start is threatened by escalating issues surrounding Jeremy, the eldest child. The film features a talented cast including Eylul Guven as Sasha, alongside Iringó Réti, Ádám Tompa, Edik Beddoes, Amy Zimmer, Liam Serg, and Preston Drabble.

Romvari’s Unique Vision

Director Sophy Romvari brings a distinctive narrative approach to her feature debut. In her statement, she expressed a desire to explore the “fascinating limitation of fiction” and its role in capturing personal memories. She describes the film’s design as a deliberate disruption of traditional coming-of-age storytelling, offering an innovative perspective on familiar themes.

Romvari’s Rising Influence

Toronto-based Romvari has garnered attention with her critically-acclaimed short films across international festivals. Her thesis film, “Still Processing,” premiered in Toronto and was later distributed by Mubi. A retrospective of her work, available on the Criterion Channel, further established her reputation. Romvari’s collaborations with CBC Short Docs and Kino Lorber highlight her versatility and creative depth.

The MoreThan Films Perspective

Lidia Damatto, founding partner of MoreThan Films, expressed her admiration for “Blue Heron,” describing it as a poignant directorial debut. She applauded Romvari’s delicate touch in dealing with complex emotions and themes, predicting strong resonance with international audiences. MoreThan Films is excited about its inclusion in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present, building on last year’s success with films like “Hanami” and “Kouté Vwa.”

Produced by Vancouver’s Nine Behind Productions and Hungary’s Boddah, “Blue Heron” is the result of a collaborative effort that includes producers Gábor Osváth, Ryan Bobkin, and Sara Wylie. With offices in Barcelona, Berlin, and São Paulo, MoreThan Films continues to champion fresh voices in global cinema.
