Monsta X Marks a Decade of Unity and New Beginnings

Monsta X has reached a significant milestone: 10 years of making music together. As the group celebrates a decade in the industry, they’re not just looking back; they’re setting the stage for an exciting future. Known as “beast idols,” they seamlessly blend their powerful personas with a heartfelt approach, and their latest work highlights their ongoing passion and evolution.

Reflecting on a Decade of Success

Gathered in a modest hotel conference room, Monsta X radiates camaraderie and warmth. Even while discussing their rigorous work ethic and the journey they’ve undertaken, they exhibit thoughtfulness and humor. This marks the release of their new EP, The X, cleverly referencing both their name and their decade-long career. The album features six new tracks, a nod to each member of the group. Through a collaborative selection process, each member contributed to shaping these songs.

Vocalist Kihyun shared with Rolling Stone, “We each explain our reasons for why we want to include a song, but if we continue to disagree, then we’ll vote.” Group leader Shownu adds, “Sometimes we’ll share little drinks to make it fun.” Their playful dynamics shine through as they continue to grow together.

The Past as Inspiration

For the members of Monsta X, now in their thirties, maintaining their health is a priority. Shownu emphasizes the importance of well-being: “It’s so important to focus on our wellbeing.” This commitment is partly to reassure their fans, known as Monbebe, of their enduring strength. The new EP, The X, serves as a testament to both their loyalty to fans and their evolution as artists.

Monsta X’s music draws listeners across generations, with tracks like “Do What I Want” and “N the Front” delivering high energy and engaging hooks. Joohoney explains, “Each part of the song is full of energy. We think everyone can enjoy this song.” Their latest release seeks to engage old and new fans alike.

Art and Influence

The influence of Monsta X extends beyond their own music. They were key inspirations for the fictional boy band in the film KPop Demon Hunters. The group appreciates this nod to their impact, especially evident in tracks like “Savior.” I.M, who co-wrote the song, commented on its depth and complexity, aligning with Monsta X’s signature style.

This ability to innovate is noted by K-pop scholar Hye Jin Lee, who observes that Monsta X’s powerful performances and genre-blending music have set them apart. Their seamless integration of rap and vocals continues to attract a diverse audience.

The Vision Ahead

Monsta X is not confined to a single genre. Their Songs incorporate versatile styles, from rap to ballads. In 2020, they made a bold move with All About Luv, their all-English album, showcasing their commitment to connecting with a global audience.

The final track on The X, “Fire & Ice,” co-written by Hyungwon, embodies the essence of varied connections, capturing the group’s artistic growth. Songwriter Jantine Annika Heij remarks on the EP’s significance: “It had to be big, more epic, more of that guess-who’s-back feeling.”

As the interview concludes, the members exchange heartfelt compliments. They acknowledge each other’s hard work and dedication, highlighting their collective growth. Through challenges and achievements, Monsta X stands unified, with their eyes set firmly on the future.
