Kate McKinnon has candidly shared her experience with a medical condition known as geographic tongue. This revelation has sparked curiosity among fans and the public, shedding light on a lesser-known tongue condition. The comedian and former Saturday Night Live star discussed the diagnosis during an interview, offering insights into how it affects her daily life.
Understanding Geographic Tongue
During an interview with People magazine, McKinnon opened up about being diagnosed with geographic tongue, an “inflammatory but harmless condition affecting the surface of the tongue,” according to the Mayo Clinic. The condition is characterized by patches on the tongue that lack papillae, the tiny bumps that give a tongue its typical texture.
“I took a photo of my tongue and sent it to an actor friend of mine,” McKinnon explained, referring to a recent snapshot on her phone. “We both have the same medical condition. It’s called geographic tongue. Your tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name ‘geographic tongue.’”
Symptoms and Impact
Those with geographic tongue notice areas missing papillae, appearing as smooth, red patches that often shift locations. Although the condition doesn’t lead to serious health concerns, it can cause some discomfort or heightened sensitivity to certain foods, such as spices, salt, and sweets.
McKinnon humorously noted, “It’s gross. We brag about how geographic we are on any given day. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying this in a magazine.” Her comments highlight a lighthearted approach to managing the condition despite its peculiarities.
