Benedict Cumberbatch, renowned for his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently commented on Hollywood‘s wastefulness during an appearance on the “Ruthie’s Table 4” podcast. As someone deeply involved in blockbuster productions, Cumberbatch revealed the intense regimen required to transform into the iconic sorcerer, which included consuming five meals a day. His candid assessment sheds light on the significant resources consumed by the film industry, painting a picture of Hollywood as a “grossly wasteful” environment.
Cumberbatch is no novice to the demands of intense body transformations for his roles. While he embraces the physical challenge, he reflected on the excessive eating required to maintain Doctor Strange’s physique. “It’s horrific eating beyond your appetite… I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating,” Cumberbatch admitted, detailing a routine filled not only with numerous meals but also snacks like boiled eggs, almonds, and cheese.
Discussing the broader implications of Hollywood’s consumption, Cumberbatch criticized the industry for its unsustainable practices. “Think about set builds that aren’t recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy,” he said, highlighting the vast amounts of energy needed for production. His remarks underscore the industry’s responsibility in addressing these issues, advocating for more resourceful practices.
Despite the complexities of pushing for sustainability in a notoriously wasteful industry, Cumberbatch emphasized his commitment to environmental initiatives. He acknowledged the challenges actors face when advocating for green practices, often deemed hypocritical given the nature of their work. However, he mentioned practical steps he takes on set, like reducing plastic use. “You don’t have to give the crew plastic bottles,” he pointed out, stressing the need for sustainable alternatives, especially in a modern context.
Currently, Cumberbatch is promoting his upcoming film “The Roses,” alongside Olivia Colman. This project, a reimagining of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel “The War of the Roses,” follows a couple’s destructive divorce saga. As he gears up for its release, set for August 29 from Searchlight Pictures, Cumberbatch continues to use his platform to advocate for a more sustainable Hollywood.
