Jon M. Chu Reveals Stunning Clip from ‘Wicked: For Good’ and Discusses Use of Practical Effects
With anticipation building for the release of the “Wicked” sequel, “For Good,” Jon M. Chu offered fans a tantalizing preview at the BFI London Film Festival. The director showcased an exclusive clip and shared his creative approach to the film, emphasizing the use of practical effects and the emotional depth of key performances. The new teaser, featuring Elphaba and Glinda, hints at the sequel’s captivating blend of magic and realism.
Unveiling a Touching Reunion
Jon M. Chu delighted audiences with a glimpse of “For Good,” where Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, visits Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande, on her wedding day. The clip reveals a poignant reunion that occurs after the iconic “Defying Gravity.” With Glinda in a dazzling white gown and Elphaba on the run from the Wizard’s flying monkeys, the scene is charged with emotion. As a teary Glinda implores Elphaba to reconcile with the Wizard, the moment is abruptly cut short, leaving viewers eager for more.
No Digital Effects for Iconic Characters
In a striking departure from typical Hollywood practices, Chu decided to forego digital effects for the Tin Man and Scarecrow in “For Good.” Formerly Boq and Fiyero, these characters receive a transformation through real makeup and hair techniques. Chu expressed enthusiasm about this choice, underscoring the meticulous craftsmanship required: “There was no room for error.” This commitment to practical effects promises a more authentic and tangible experience for audiences.
Emotional Rendition of “For Good”
Chu also touched on the emotional resonance of the film’s titular song, “For Good.” Performed by Erivo and Grande, Chu described it as the “most beautiful, emotional version” he had ever heard. Emphasizing the unique dynamic between the characters, he noted that their performance transcended traditional singing, becoming a form of genuine communication. This approach allowed the actors’ chemistry to shine, transforming the scene into an intimate interaction that, according to Chu, needed minimal directorial interference.
A Promising Future
Having filmed both “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” back-to-back in the U.K., primarily at Sky Studios Elstree, Chu celebrates the success of the first film and looks toward future projects. With the first “Wicked” film earning over $750 million and garnering critical acclaim, expectations are high for the sequel. Chu also hinted at his next venture: adapting Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for Amazon Studios. This project reunites him with producer Scott Sanders and represents another exciting chapter in his career.
With “Wicked: For Good” set to release on November 21, Jon M. Chu’s creative vision and dedication to practical artistry continue to captivate and intrigue audiences worldwide.
