Jennifer Lawrence is relishing a resurgence in her career, largely fueled by her return to the iconic role of Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise On The Reaping. While she expresses heartfelt gratitude for the transformative impact of this character on her life, her feelings about revisiting a different major franchise role are decidedly less warm.
No More Blue Paint for Lawrence
In a candid moment during a recent Allure interview, Lawrence was bluntly asked if she would ever don the heavy paint and prosthetics that characterized her portrayal of Mystique in the X-Men franchise. Her response was unequivocal: “Absolutely fucking not.” Although she acknowledged the possibility of change with the phrase “Never say never,” her tone implied a firm reluctance about returning to that role. Reflecting on her experience, she described the arduous process of getting into character, which could take up to eight hours, saying, “You know how air brushing is very cold?”
Challenges of Playing Mystique
Lawrence’s journey through four X-Men films was not without its challenges. While she embraced the stunts and collaborated closely with her stunt double, Renee Moneymaker—who also worked with her on Hunger Games—the extensive makeup process took a toll. She reflected on the mental and physical strain, revealing how the experience taught her about her limits: “I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you’ve actually reached your breaking point. And patience!”
The Future of X-Men in Marvel
Given Lawrence’s strong aversion to re-entering the Mystique role, any hope for a Marvel reunion involving her character seems unlikely, especially with the studio’s recent push to reintroduce the X-Men into their cinematic universe. While Lawrence is clearly not interested in returning, there are actors like Rebecca Romijn, who once played Mystique, ready to step back into the franchise. Romijn has agreed to reprise her role in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, making her one of the few who can truly empathize with Lawrence’s challenging experience.
As Lawrence celebrates her return to a beloved character in the Hunger Games universe, it appears she has definitively moved on from the days of blue paint and prosthetics, much to the relief of her fans and herself.
