James Gunn Challenges Perceptions of 'Superman' Amid Global Concerns

Renowned filmmaker James Gunn recently addressed the unexpected conservative backlash labeling his latest film, “Superman,” as “SuperWoke.” His remarks about the character being an “immigrant” drew criticism from certain media outlets, sparking a debate over what constitutes “woke” content in modern cinema. Gunn’s reflections illuminate broader themes, including anti-American sentiment worldwide and its potential impact on the global box office. Despite challenges, “Superman” has proven successful domestically, but Gunn believes international perceptions may be affecting its global reach.

The Backlash Unpacked

James Gunn expressed confusion over the categorization of “Superman” as “woke” during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Fox News and other conservative media criticized the film after Gunn described Superman as an “immigrant,” noting its roots in the immigrant story of America. He explained, “I’ve heard people say it was woke, and then I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not. I am curious as to what in the movie is considered woke.” Gunn emphasized that the film’s core message is about “kindness,” not political ideology.

Gunn’s comment about Superman’s immigrant origins ignited commentary from various quarters, including Fox News and former Superman actor Dean Cain. Cain speculated that the “immigrant” label might negatively impact the film’s performance. Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, robustly defended the remarks, asserting that embracing immigrants aligns with American values.

Box Office Success Amid Controversy

Despite the “SuperWoke” controversy, “Superman” managed to captivate U.S. audiences, achieving impressive box office numbers. Domestically, the film grossed $235 million in its first two weekends, though its international earnings lagged, reaching $171 million. Gunn affirmed the film’s robust domestic performance and noted that international audiences were slowly embracing the film, highlighting its strong showing in countries like Brazil and the U.K.

Gunn told Rolling Stone, “We’re definitely performing better domestically than we are internationally, but internationally is also rising and having really good weekday numbers. So obviously the word of mouth is very positive both here and everywhere else.”

Navigating Global Perceptions

James Gunn touched on broader issues affecting the film’s international reception, including the character’s recognition abroad and prevailing anti-American sentiment. “Superman is not a known commodity in some places. He is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things,” he remarked. Gunn believes these external factors are obstacles but remains optimistic about the film’s potential to grow globally.

Gunn concluded by expressing gratitude for the film’s positive reception: “Having the movie come out and be something that has been embraced by people everywhere — this is just the seed of the tree that Peter and I have been watering for the past three years.” His optimism reflects the broader success of planting new narratives in the superhero genre.

“Superman” continues to screen in theaters nationwide, captivating audiences with its fresh take on an iconic character.
