Irish Oscars Choose Ukrainian Documentary 'Sanatorium' as Entry

The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) has made a notable choice by selecting “Sanatorium,” an Irish-produced, Ukrainian-language documentary, as its official entry for the international feature film category at the upcoming Oscars. This decision follows in the prestigious footsteps of previous Irish contenders, reflecting a growing recognition of international collaborations in cinema.

A Unique Irish Entry

“Sanatorium,” directed by Galway native Gar O’Rourke, is Ireland‘s latest submission for the 98th Academy Awards. This Ukrainian-language documentary departs from conventional narratives by exploring the Kuyalnik Sanatorium in southern Ukraine, a place steeped in history and Soviet-era therapies. Through the lens of O’Rourke, audiences are invited into a world where love, healing, and the therapeutic properties of mysterious black mud are pursued in the shadow of conflict.

Previously premiered at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen, “Sanatorium” has received commendation for its unique storytelling and visual storytelling, offering a fresh perspective on resilience and hope.

Collaborative Cinematic Efforts

The creation of “Sanatorium” was made possible by Venom Films, producers Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman, and co-producers 2332 Films Ukraine. With backing from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, and others, the documentary illustrates the power of international cooperation. O’Rourke’s film benefits from exceptional contributions by editor John Murphy and director of photography Denys Melnyk, capturing vivid imagery that resonates with audiences globally.

The film’s relevance and allure were aptly captured by IFTA chief executive Áine Moriarty, who praised its engaging narrative and ability to reflect the persistence of the human spirit despite challenging circumstances.

Recognition and Anticipation

The selection process by IFTA’s 2025 committee, chaired by Áine Moriarty and composed of accomplished filmmakers and industry professionals, underscores the film’s quality and impact. “Sanatorium” is poised to follow successes like “Kneecap” and “The Quiet Girl,” raising anticipation ahead of the December 16 shortlist announcement and the final nominations on January 22.

Director Gar O’Rourke expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the collaborative spirit and dedication behind the film. He highlights the role of the Ukrainian crew and producers in achieving this cinematic milestone.

The global response to “Sanatorium” since its premiere signifies its profound impact, and as Ireland’s official Oscar entry, it carries forward the narrative of healing and resilience, ready to captivate the Academy and international audiences alike.
