As the highly anticipated “Wicked” film draws near, casting director Bernard Telsey reflects on the unique challenges and opportunities brought by the pandemic. Known for his exceptional work on Broadway, Telsey faced a new set of obstacles when COVID delayed projects but ultimately helped secure the perfect Fiyero. The buzz around the musical adaptation has culminated in the sought-after role going to none other than Jonathan Bailey, whose casting journey is as compelling as the story of “Wicked” itself.
Reviving a Classic with a Stellar Cast
When Universal finally gave the green light to the “Wicked” film, Bernard Telsey was no stranger to the musical. He had once cast the original Broadway production, bringing stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth to the stage. Revisiting the casting process for the film adaptation, Telsey knew it involved more than just understanding the script. “I know Marc Platt, the producer, Jon M. Chu, the film’s director, and I certainly know the musical. Great, let’s go get our favorite people,” he remarked with a laugh.
Despite his extensive experience, Telsey found the casting process complex. Unlike theater, where performers must endure intense vocal demands repeatedly, film production required different considerations. “No one got offers; everyone had to come in and go through the casting process,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of real-time auditions, regardless of accolades.
The Role of COVID in Casting
The global pandemic didn’t just pose hurdles but offered unexpected opportunities. As Telsey explained, casting Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero wasn’t straightforward. Although well aware of Bailey’s talents, scheduling conflicts initially seemed insurmountable. “God bless his manager, Duncan Millership, who was smart enough to call and say, ‘Johnny Bailey is going to be passing through New York, you want to have a general with him,’” Telsey shared.
The delay caused by COVID reshuffled their timelines, allowing Bailey’s availability to align with the project. This serendipity came after months of searching for a perfect match for Fiyero, affirming what Telsey and his team had felt all along: “It’s Jonathan f—ing Bailey.”
The Achievements of a Dynamic Cast
The film also benefits from having Ariana Grande as Glinda, a decision that came after rigorous auditions. Telsey praised her ability to transform, focusing on Glinda’s vocals rather than her own. “She’s got such an incredible instrument and such a wonderful craft,” he noted, reflecting satisfaction with the collaboration.
Cynthia Erivo, bringing Elphaba to life, encapsulated the vulnerability and strength needed for the role. Telsey recalled her audition with admiration, noting how she stripped everything back to reveal Elphaba’s emotional journey. “She was so vulnerable and allowed all of the stuff that happens to Elphaba to happen. It was so moving,” he said.
Honoring Casting as a Profession
The recognition of casting as a crucial part of filmmaking has reached a peak with the inclusion of a casting Oscar. “There’s nothing better,” Telsey expressed, delighted at the acknowledgment within the industry. This recognition elevates the profession and showcases the meticulous work involved in bringing beloved stories like “Wicked” to life on the screen.
