HBO Max Confirms Release Date for Iconic "Superman"

The much-anticipated film “Superman” is set to make its streaming debut on HBO Max starting September 19. Announced by writer-director James Gunn through his social media, this release marks a significant milestone for the film, which has already captivated audiences worldwide. Garnering $615 million at the global box office, it stands as the top-grossing comic book movie of the year so far.

A Summer Blockbuster

Originally released in theaters by Warner Bros. on July 11, “Superman” made an impressive impact. Its opening weekend saw a domestic box office intake of $125 million, maintaining its position as the number-one film for two consecutive weeks. This success prevailed until Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” took the lead at the close of July.

Reviving the DC Universe

Directed by James Gunn, “Superman” serves as the first film in Warner Bros.’ revamped DC Universe. Under the leadership of Gunn and producer Peter Safran, DC Studios aims to create a cohesive cinematic universe that draws from the rich history of its comic book characters. This effort marks Warner Bros.’ second attempt to establish a unified DC Cinematic Universe, as the previous DC Extended Universe, which included films like “Man of Steel” and “Wonder Woman,” slowed down after “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023.

A Star-Studded Cast

The film introduces David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane. The cast features notable names such as Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. The ensemble is rounded out with Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho and Bradley Cooper as Jor-El, among others. Fans will also see familiar faces, with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and John Cena’s Peacemaker, the latter being the sole character from the former DC Extended Universe appearing in this new iteration.

Expanding the DC Catalog on HBO Max

Once it begins streaming on HBO Max, “Superman” will join other acclaimed DC titles like “The Penguin” and “Peacemaker.” This addition further enriches the platform’s offerings, making it a hub for superhero enthusiasts eager to dive deeper into the DC Universe.
