Brandon Routh, the actor who once donned Superman‘s iconic cape, recently shared his thoughts on James Gunn‘s latest rendition of the superhero saga. His praise for David Corenswet‘s portrayal of the Man of Steel was heartfelt, reflecting the deep connection Routh still maintains with the beloved character. With an emotional response to the film, Routh not only celebrates a new Superman era but also discusses his latest project, “Ick,” blending sci-fi horror and comedy.
When James Gunn’s Superman hit theaters earlier this month, former Man of Steel Brandon Routh took to Instagram to show his support.
Routh shared a post with a trailer for the movie, urging fans to “Go see #Superman in theaters now!”
He expressed his excitement about seeing the film soon and mentioned engaging with Superman fans at @fanboy_expo in Nashville, stating, “Same as me!”
Brandon Routh’s Emotional Reaction to New Superman
Having portrayed the iconic superhero in the 2006 film Superman Returns, Routh recently watched the new movie.
“It was a lot of fun,” he remarked during a promotional event for his latest film, “Ick.” Routh praised David Corenswet’s performance, saying, “I cried no less than three times.”
Viewing the movie from a unique perspective, Routh found himself deeply moved by scenes with Lois and Clark, particularly the family moments, highlighting its emotional depth. “I have to go see it again,” he admitted.
Despite Superman Returns not meeting box office expectations, Routh remains optimistic about the DC Universe’s future, maintaining a positive outlook for potential new stories.
The Journey from Superman to “Ick”
In his new film “Ick,” Routh takes on a different role as Hank Wallace, an ex-high school football star turned science teacher. Teaming up with a student he suspects is his daughter, they face an alien threat endangering their town.
Blending horror, sci-fi, and comedy, the movie features music by All-American Rejects, Paramore, and Blink 182, transporting viewers back to the year 2000. The director, Joseph Kahn, used old footage to de-age Routh and his co-star Mena Suvari for their high school scenes.
Reflecting on his own high school experience, Routh shared, “I was like Clark Kent… social at school, but I didn’t have friends outside of school.”
“Ick” and Its Underlying Themes
In “Ick,” Routh’s character grapples with ridicule from students, an experience he found both “weird and humbling.” As the alien menace grows, it poses questions about societal fears, whether related to COVID, climate change, or other global challenges. “It’s a fun popcorn movie but there’s layering there,” Routh noted. The film invites viewers to confront the “icky” issues often ignored until they become overwhelming.
With “Ick” offering an escape from reality, Routh remains optimistic. “I’m doing good, all things considered,” he shared. “I got a movie coming out and ‘Superman’ is also out. It’s a good summer.”
“Ick” will premiere in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on July 25, with a nationwide rollout planned for July 27.
