HBO Embraces ‘Welcome to Derry’ in All Its Gory Glory

In an unexpected twist for fans and creators alike, HBO’s “It: Welcome to Derry” emerges as a boundary-pushing horror series without any content cuts from the network. This daring prequel, revolving around the infamous Pennywise in 1962, comes ahead of the events of “It” (2018) and its sequel “It: Chapter Two” (2019). With “It: Welcome to Derry” now set to premiere, the creators share their surprise and process behind crafting a series that HBO accepted in its full, gory glory.

A Bold Vision for Pennywise’s Origin

The eight-episode series serves as an intriguing origin story for Pennywise, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård. Set in 1962, it delves into the sinister events that led to the fearsome clown’s torment in Derry. Director Andy Muschietti, collaborating with his sister Barbara Muschietti and writer Jason Fuchs, embraced a no-holds-barred approach to horror. “I think the audience likes to be surprised,” Andy explained at the premiere in Burbank. “We did it more intensely in every aspect.”

Unexpected Green Light from HBO

Barbara Muschietti expressed her astonishment at the studio’s openness to their chilling vision. “I kept thinking, ‘I’m going to get the call,’” she said of expecting HBO to request edits. Instead, the network supported the series’ uncompromising nature. Taylour Paige, who stars as a new Derry resident, was advised by Barbara to brace herself due to the series’ intense content. “If you’re gonna do it, do it – go all the way,” Paige shared, reflecting on her experience with the show’s graphic horror.

The Creative Journey

Actor Chris Chalk, playing an Army soldier, was taken aback by the visceral fear depicted on screen. “There are things that you are going to see that are appropriately disgusting,” he noted. Meanwhile, co-showrunner Jason Fuchs recounted reactions from his family to the series’ dark themes. “It’s a show about the darkness inside all of us,” he said. The creative team aimed to delve deep into horror, exploring both gore and psychological terror.

Beyond Pennywise: Future Projects

The Muschiettis also briefly touched upon their upcoming work in the DC Universe with “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” While details remain under wraps, Andy hinted at progress without divulging specifics. “We have to wait a few, a couple of months to start talking about it,” he teased.

“It: Welcome to Derry” is set to air on HBO on October 26, offering viewers an unflinching look at horror that doesn’t shy away from pushing limits.
