First Look: King of Pop's Rise in 'Michael' Biopic Trailer

Anticipation is building as Lionsgate unveils the first trailer for “Michael,” the biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua that chronicles the rise of Michael Jackson to become the King of Pop. This eagerly awaited glimpse into Jackson’s life promises a vivid portrayal of his journey, filled with the legendary music and performances that solidified his status as a global icon.

The Rise of an Icon

With Jaafar Jackson stepping into the shoes of his celebrated uncle, the “Michael” trailer opens with a scene that captures the essence of creative partnership—Michael Jackson in the recording studio with the legendary Quincy Jones, portrayed by Kendrick Sampson. Jones’s words, “I know you’ve been waiting a long time for this. The tracks are made, the songs are ready. Let’s take it from the top,” set the stage for a montage that brilliantly weaves together clips from Jackson’s early years, unforgettable performances, and iconic music videos, including hints of the revolutionary “Thriller.” As these visuals unfold, the 1982 classic “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” plays, echoing the energy and magnetism that defined Jackson’s career.

A Star-Studded Ensemble

The film boasts a remarkable cast, with Jaafar Jackson leading alongside talents such as Miles Teller, who takes on the role of John Branca, Jackson’s trusted attorney and adviser. Colman Domingo portrays Joe Jackson, while Nia Long brings to life his mother, Katherine Jackson. The biopic also features Jessica Sula as sister LaToya Jackson and Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, adding layers of depth to the story of the King of Pop.

An Epic Production Journey

Initially slated for an October 2025 release, “Michael” will now make its theatrical debut on April 24, 2026. The production concluded in May 2024, but further creative enhancements led to reshoots. Despite speculation about a two-part narrative, the trailer suggests a singular, cohesive film that captures Michael Jackson’s rise to fame. The official synopsis hints at a deep, personal exploration of his legacy and the indelible mark he left on the music world.

Bringing Michael’s Story to Life

Additional cast members enrich the narrative, including Liv Symone as Gladys Knight, Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark, and KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Bill Bray, Jackson’s former security and confidante. Quincy Jones, played by Kendrick Sampson, plays a pivotal role as the industry titan who recognized Jackson’s exceptional talent at a young age. The screenplay, crafted by John Logan, ensures authenticity and depth, with industry veterans John Branca, Graham King, and John McClain producing.
