Amid a bustling summer box office, “Fantastic Four” braces for a significant second weekend drop, while “The Naked Gun” opens with a strong $6.3 million. Despite its initial promise, “Fantastic Four” faces stiff competition from new releases, stirring anticipation among theater owners for upcoming August hits.
‘Fantastic Four’ Faces Steep Decline
The superhero film, “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” continues to hold the top spot at the box office during its second weekend, though its $11.7 million Friday earnings reflect a steep 80% drop from its debut. This substantial decline threatens to fall short of the initially projected $45 to $52 million for the weekend, even as the film’s domestic total nears $170 million. Despite Marvel’s investment of over $200 million, the film struggles to broaden its appeal beyond dedicated comic book enthusiasts.
The star-studded cast, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, initially hinted at potential success in a post-pandemic Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, despite a promising start with $118 million, “Fantastic Four” hasn’t expanded its audience effectively, much like previous titles such as “Thunderbolts,” “The Marvels,” and “Eternals.”
Newcomers Aim for Box Office Gold
As “Fantastic Four” grapples with its challenges, theater owners look forward to three major releases: the animated sequel “The Bad Guys 2,” the comedy reboot “The Naked Gun,” and the body-horror thriller “Together.” “The Bad Guys 2” achieved a strong $9.1 million on Friday and is poised for a $22 million weekend. Helmed by Sam Rockwell and Marc Maron, this $80 million production brings the wisecracking crew back for another adventure.
“The Naked Gun,” featuring Liam Neeson as Detective Frank Drebin Jr., collected $6.3 million on its opening day from 3,344 theaters. Paramount’s $42 million reboot is projected to bring in $16.5 million by Sunday. Directed by Akiva Schaffer, the film maintains the comedic legacy of the original, which starred Leslie Nielsen and became an iconic part of American comedy history.
Other Performers in the Lineup
Despite strong competition, “Together” ranks sixth, earning approximately $2.1 million on Friday. This indie thriller stars Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple facing a mysterious force, and aims for $7.5 to $10 million over its opening run. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s “Superman” and Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” continue to perform well, earning $4 million and $2.4 million on Friday, respectively.
The box office landscape presents a dynamic and intriguing battle with “Fantastic Four” and “The Naked Gun” leading the charge in different directions. As summer progresses, theater owners remain hopeful for an August resurgence, driven by fresh cinematic offerings.
