Disney is implementing a Voluntary Early Retirement Offer (VERO) program for eligible executives as a part of its wider strategy to cut costs amid ongoing layoffs. The announcement was made by Senior EVP and Chief People Officer Sonia Coleman in a memo to staff on Monday.
Details of the Retirement Offer
The VERO is a time-sensitive, company-sponsored initiative designed to allow qualified executives to retire early with an enhanced retirement package that acknowledges their long service and contributions to the company. The benefits of this offer include separation pay, continued vesting of existing equity awards, healthcare support at active employee rates, and ongoing access to Disney theme parks through the Silver Pass.
Eligibility Criteria
This retirement option is available to U.S.-based employees at the director level and above within Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and corporate divisions. Eligible participants must meet a threshold of 65 points, calculated by their age plus years of service, with a minimum age requirement of 50 and at least 10 years of service. However, employees on contracts do not qualify for the early retirement offer.
Corporate Transformation and Future Plans
During an earnings call in August, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston indicated that further layoffs and cost-reduction measures are anticipated following previous cuts made in April and July. Coleman’s memo reiterated the company’s ongoing transformation focused on significantly reducing costs to invest in areas that foster future growth, such as content, technology, and customer experiences.
Support and Personal Decision-Making
In her communication to staff, Coleman acknowledged the deeply personal nature of the decision to retire. She emphasized the company’s commitment to providing eligible employees with ample information, time, and support to make an informed choice. The organization aims to empower employees to opt for retirement on their own terms before wider organizational changes take place.
Leadership Guidance and Transparency
In preparation for employee inquiries regarding the VERO, Coleman encouraged leaders to direct any detailed questions to their HR Business Partner or the dedicated People & Culture resources that will accompany the program. The initiative operates on principles that ensure participation is entirely voluntary, recognizes tenure, allows sufficient time for decision-making, and offers comprehensive support throughout the entire process.
The memo encapsulates Disney’s recognition of the importance of care, respect, and professionalism as the company navigates these changes. As the VERO program rolls out, the leadership is grateful for the continued support from executives as they manage both their teams and the implications of this announcement.
For further details, eligible executives will receive personalized communication outlining the specifics of the offer, including the election process and key dates to remember.
