Daniel Donato’s latest album, Horizons, is a testament to his evolution as a musician and person. The album features Donato’s distinctive “cosmic country” style, blending traditional country with psychedelic rock influences. In this exploration of sound, Donato channels the spirit of Gram Parsons and other iconic guitarists, crafting a record that resonates with both heart and history.
Exploring New Horizons
For Daniel Donato, Horizons represents more than just an album title; it symbolizes a crucial point in his life. As he explained to Rolling Stone, the horizon is “where the land meets the heavens,” a metaphor for personal and artistic growth. “It’s the level where your capacity meets the next level,” Donato reflects, indicating a readiness to embrace new discoveries.
Recently turning 30, Donato views this milestone as a pivotal moment. Rather than indulging in youthful excess, he now focuses on deeper meanings both onstage and off. “Life is reflecting back in me everything I’ve wanted,” he says, acknowledging unexpected growth and lessons.
Embracing Pressure and Adventure
As his band ascends from intimate clubs to mid-level theaters, Donato embraces the pressures and opportunities that come with success. His Cosmic Country group is gaining recognition across America, offering a dynamic blend of styles. “I like the pressure,” Donato admits. “It’s good to raise the heat, to try to get to that next horizon.”
Donato relishes the adventure of exploring new possibilities. “Whenever anyone gets called onto a new horizon, that’s where the spirit of adventure can bring something else dwelling within you,” he muses.
A Musical Journey
The album Horizons is deeply rooted in country music’s rich traditions. Donato’s honky-tonk foundation was honed as a teenager at Nashville’s Robert’s Western World. Despite his forays into jam-rock, the essence of a country picker is ever-present in his work.
His sound weaves influences from the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons, to Cowboy’s collaboration with Duane Allman, and the Byrds. “I’m influenced by the artists who shaped Parsons,” he explains. Legends like George Jones, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash have all left their mark on him.
Harnessing Potential Beauty
Donato channels the “potential beauty” of America through his music, even amidst the complexities of the current political climate. “The idea of America is righteous,” he states, “illuminated by something higher than us.”
For Donato, the journey involves embracing challenges and opportunities alike. “To embrace the horizon, to embrace the monsters, the tragic sorrow in the inevitable mortality in this journey,” he says, reflects the American ideal. This philosophy underpins his art and his life, encouraging grace, growth, and the pursuit of transcending potential.
