Daniel Day-Lewis, the acclaimed three-time Oscar winner, has opened up about his decision to end his acting retirement after eight years. In a surprise return, he will star in “Anemone,” a film directed by his son, Ronan. Despite his prior retirement announcement, Day-Lewis reveals the passion for his craft never truly faded. Read on to discover how his love for acting and collaboration with his son reignited his creative spark.
A Heartfelt Return
After stepping away from acting post-2017’s “Phantom Thread,” Daniel Day-Lewis had privately decided to retire. Known for his intense dedication, the actor had previously taken a hiatus in 1997, exploring a different craft as a shoemaker in Italy. His love for the art wasn’t lost, even though he stepped away from the limelight to recalibrate.
Collaborating with his son Ronan on “Anemone,” Day-Lewis found the perfect project to end his eight-year hiatus. “I had some residual sadness,” he shared, noting the joy of joining his son in filmmaking outweighed his previous hesitations.
The Story Behind “Anemone”
In “Anemone,” Day-Lewis portrays a recluse whose quiet life is disrupted by his brother’s arrival. With a cast featuring Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton, the film promises a touching narrative driven by intimate family dynamics.
Initially hesitant about returning to public life, Day-Lewis confessed, “There were aspects of the way of life that went with [acting] that I’d never come to terms with.” Yet, his son’s insistence made the decision clearer, with Ronan making it known, “he wasn’t going to do it if I didn’t do it.”
Rediscovering the Passion
Despite his concerns, Day-Lewis’s affection for the craft remained steadfast. “I never, ever stopped loving the work,” he said. The actor’s previous experiences, particularly around “Phantom Thread,” left him feeling “hollowed out.” Yet, collaborating with Ronan reignited a creative spark he feared lost.
Reflecting on these moments, Day-Lewis admitted, “I never intended to retire, really. I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work.” The collaboration with his son “lit up” his creative furnace once more, proving both a rejuvenating and joyful experience.
“Anemone” is set to debut in select theaters on October 3, with a broader release scheduled for October 10, courtesy of Focus Features. For a deeper dive into Day-Lewis’s thoughts, visit Rolling Stone to read the full interview.
