‘Conjuring: Last Rites’ Breaks Records with Stunning $83M Debut

The haunting success of “Conjuring: Last Rites” has made waves at the box office, generating a remarkable $83 million during its debut weekend. This achievement not only marks a record-breaking start for the “Conjuring” series but also establishes it as a standout in the horror genre this year, captivating audiences worldwide.

The Box Office Phenomenon

With a spectacular opening, “Conjuring: Last Rites” eclipsed previous records within the franchise. The movie surpassed the 2018 spinoff “The Nun,” which had a $53.8 million debut. As the highest-grossing horror opening of the year, it outperformed May’s “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” which garnered $51.6 million. Impressively, it ranks as the third-largest horror debut ever, trailing only behind the formidable “It” franchise entries from 2017 and 2019.

Predictions initially placed “Conjuring: Last Rites” at a $50-$60 million start. However, pent-up audience demand and positive word-of-mouth propelled sales beyond expectations. The film features Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga returning as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, tackling a new demonic threat. Despite mixed reviews—a common occurrence for horror—the allure of this being the “final” installment drew crowds, although its success hints at future sequels.

Global Acclaim and Impact

Internationally, the film amassed an extraordinary $104 million across 66 territories, raising its total global earnings to an impressive $187 million. This opening has set a new overseas debut record for horror, outpacing “It: Chapter Two,” which previously held the title. The worldwide enthusiasm for Ed and Lorraine Warren’s supernatural adventures remains unabated.

“This is a smash,” remarked analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, highlighting the endless appetite horror fans have for the Warrens’ eerie escapades.

Franchise Dominance and Production Notes

The “Conjuring” franchise, spanning nine films including titles like “Annabelle” and “The Nun,” continues to dominate the horror landscape, accruing a total of $2.3 billion. “Conjuring: Last Rites,” with a production budget of $55 million, is set to deliver substantial returns. Director Michael Chaves, along with producers James Wan and Peter Safran, expertly crafted this latest installment, reinforcing the series’ legacy.

This release is part of Warner Bros.’ impressive streak of successes, being their seventh consecutive film to debut above $40 million in a year. After previous box office disappointments, “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” and other hits have revitalized the studio’s fortunes, setting high expectations for upcoming projects.

Other Noteworthy Releases

Meanwhile, Disney’s screen adaptation of “Hamilton” entered the box office with $10 million, a strong figure despite its prior availability on Disney+. Initially billed as a limited release, its theatrical run may extend based on audience demand.

The current box office resurgence offers a boost following a slow summer, despite comparisons to last year’s stronger performance. This year, box office revenue remains slightly ahead, a promising sign as the fall season kicks off.

Holdover films like “Weapons,” which earned $5.3 million in its third weekend, continue to perform well, alongside titles like “Freakier Friday” and “Caught Stealing,” which contributed to a varied box office landscape.
