In a strategic move set to elevate cinematic experiences, Cinemark is gearing up to install 70mm Imax screens in several locations across the United States and South America, just in time for Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated film, “The Odyssey.” This initiative aims to captivate moviegoers by offering an unparalleled viewing experience with the rare yet highly coveted 70mm film format, particularly favored by visionary directors like Nolan.
Expanding Imax Technology
Under a new agreement enhancing its partnership with key technology companies, Cinemark is set to construct three new 70mm film projection systems and four Imax with Laser systems in the U.S. Additionally, the theater chain plans to upgrade its remaining 12 Imax screens to the advanced Imax with Laser technology. This cutting-edge 4K laser projection system promises to deliver stunning visuals and superior sound quality through its proprietary technology, marking a significant enhancement for movie enthusiasts.
Strategic Locations for 70mm Screens
The new Imax 70mm film projection systems will be strategically placed in Cinemark’s Seven Bridges in Chicago, Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs, and Tinseltown in Rochester. Cinemark already boasts one 70mm Imax location at Webb Chapel in Dallas. These developments are timed to be operational before the release of Nolan’s “The Odyssey” on July 17, 2026, which will be the first film shot entirely in the Imax format. Currently, only 30 theaters worldwide are equipped to offer this elite viewing medium.
Industry Leaders on the Expansion
Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax, emphasized, “Cinemark expanding its commitment to the very best of what Imax has to offer… underscores the value we’re delivering… With a tremendous slate ahead in 2026… we look forward to working with Cinemark to deliver the most immersive cinematic experiences.” This collaboration highlights the growing demand for premium large formats, driven by directors like Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, who consistently advocate for viewing films on expansive screens.
Cinemark’s Vision
Sean Gamble, President and CEO of Cinemark, expressed enthusiasm about the upgrades, stating, “These enhancements reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality… experiences that drive greater value perception… We’re pleased to expand our partnership with Imax… to offer a range of elevated cinematic experiences.” Cinemark’s focus on expanding its Imax with Laser and 70mm systems underscores its dedication to providing a superior movie-watching experience, catering to diverse cinematic preferences.
As Cinemark steps into this next phase of technological innovation, moviegoers can expect a future where films like “The Odyssey” can be enjoyed as intended by the creators, in breathtaking detail and clarity.
