Bob Dylan Revives ‘Million Miles’ Live After Nearly a Decade

Bob Dylan‘s ongoing Lights of Autumn tour continues to enchant audiences, delivering surprising setlists and innovative interpretations. The tour made a memorable stop at the OVB Arena in Bremen, Germany, on October 25, where Dylan treated fans to a performance of the Time Out of Mind classic “Million Miles,” marking its first live rendition since 2014. Although fans were required to secure their phones for the concert, an impressively clear audience recording of the moment has since surfaced.

Reinventing ‘Trying to Get to Heaven’

During the Bremen concert, Dylan also revealed a radical reimagining of “Trying to Get to Heaven,” a staple from the same album. This rendition drew intriguing parallels to his iconic 1976 track “One More Cup of Coffee,” showcasing Dylan’s ability to continually reinvent his catalog. Just two nights earlier in Flensburg, Germany, he had performed the same song, but the rendition in Bremen left a lasting impression, highlighting his propensity for creative spontaneity.

Highlights from the Tour Launch

The Lights of Autumn tour kicked off on October 19 in Oslo, Norway, where Dylan surprised fans by debuting covers of Randy Newman’s “Louisiana 1927” and Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues.” He also delighted attendees with “Crash on the Levee (Down in the Flood)” for the first time since 2005, along with the first live performance of “Tangled Up in Blue” since 2018—complete with new verses, played on the piano with minimal accompaniment.

Though the covers introduced on opening night quickly disappeared, the fresh take on “Tangled Up in Blue” has remained a fixture in the setlist, along with a tender rendition of “Girl From The North Country.”

A Dynamic Band Line-up

This European leg of the tour has also seen the introduction of guitarist Mike Seal, adding another chapter to the ever-changing dynamic of Dylan’s band. Following the abrupt departures of longtime members Doug Lancio and Bob Britt earlier this year, a succession of talented guitarists—including Julian Lage, Joel Paterson, and Jad Tarik—have taken their places on stage. Currently, Paterson and Seal share guitar duties, but as with many aspects of Dylan’s performances, changes could occur without warning.
