‘Black Phone 2’ Dominates Quiet October Box Office with $26.5M

As Halloween approaches, horror films are seizing the spotlight, and leading the charge is Black Phone 2. The much-anticipated sequel has captured $26.5 million from 3,411 theaters across North America, marking a standout performance during an otherwise subdued October weekend at the box office. This achievement underlines the film’s ability to draw audiences back to cinemas, proving once again the enduring appeal of the horror genre.

Strong Debut for Black Phone 2

Black Phone 2 opened in alignment with expectations, exceeding its 2021 predecessor, Black Phone, which initially launched with $23 million. The original film released during a time when cinemas were still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, securing fourth place amidst stiff competition from major blockbusters such as Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World: Dominion. The sequel, however, benefitted from a comparably lesser challenge in October, propelling it to the top of the charts.

Box Office Competition

While Black Phone 2 led the box office, other contenders struggled to make a significant impact. Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Good Fortune debuted at third place with a modest $6.2 million from 2,990 venues. Meanwhile, Disney’s sci-fi sequel Tron: Ares secured second place with $11 million across 4,000 screens, experiencing a significant 66% drop since its opening weekend. Overall, the October box office has seen an 11% decline compared to the previous year, according to Comscore.

International Success and Financial Realities

Internationally, Black Phone 2 has proven its global appeal, adding $15.5 million to bring its worldwide earnings to $42 million. Despite a higher production cost of $30 million, compared to the first film’s $18 million budget, the sequel’s performance is promising. However, it was not as favorably received as the original, earning a “B” CinemaScore rather than the “B+” of its predecessor.

For Black Phone 2 to be considered a resounding success, it needs sustained box office presence. Blumhouse Productions, known for high-profit, low-budget horror hits, is hoping this sequel can reestablish its winning streak following a series of underperforming titles.

Challenges for Other Releases

Good Fortune, despite favorable reviews and a “B+” CinemaScore, did not attract large audiences at its $30 million budget. Directed by Aziz Ansari in his feature debut, the film features Keanu Reeves as a quirky angel facilitating a body swap between characters played by Ansari and Seth Rogen. According to David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, while the opening was fair for an original comedy, it likely won’t cover its costs.

Tron: Ares, grappling with a hefty $180 million production cost, has earned $54.6 million domestically and $103 million worldwide. Though impressive, it must continue to perform well to justify its financial investment.

Meanwhile, Channing Tatum’s Roofman and Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another also entered the top charts, though both face financial challenges. One Battle After Another has gained attention as an Oscar contender, offering value beyond box office receipts despite potentially steep losses.

This October weekend highlights both the resilience and unpredictability of cinema as the industry navigates post-pandemic dynamics, with Black Phone 2 leading the narrative of a competitive box office landscape.
