Renowned performer Billy Porter has taken on the role of executive producer for the Oscar-eligible documentary short “Freeman Vines.” This captivating film dives deep into the life and work of an extraordinary artist, generating considerable interest within both the arts and cinema communities. By joining this project, Porter adds a powerful voice to the documentary, which explores themes of resilience, creativity, and the lasting impact of racism.
Unveiling a Powerful Legacy
Directed by André Robert Lee and Tim Kirkman, “Freeman Vines” is an evocative portrayal of the 82-year-old sculptor and guitar-maker from Fountain, North Carolina. The documentary takes viewers on a journey through Vines’ life, highlighting his unique art crafted from wood taken from a tree involved in a tragic lynching. As Vines confronts his mortality with multiple myeloma and diabetes, the film paints a vivid picture of his philosophies, humor, and unwavering confrontation with the South’s racist legacy.
“Freeman Vines was a fierce, extraordinary human, and this expression of his story is simply gorgeous,” Porter stated on Thursday. “The life of an artist can be a hard road, and Freeman navigated a complicated community and history, but he discovered what it meant to live in truth with a freedom he claimed for himself. We should all be so lucky. ‘Freeman Vines,’ directed by André Robert Lee and Tim Kirkman, offers a profound lesson about human connection, resilience, and creativity. I am honored to be part of this project, and I hope audiences will truly witness it.”
A Festival Favorite
The documentary has garnered praise, winning top awards at many Academy-recognized festivals such as the Tallahassee Film Festival. Its screenings at notable events like Tribeca, RiverRun, and Florida Film Festivals have secured its position as a must-watch film. Additionally, “Freeman Vines” has been showcased in high-profile festivals, including Woodstock, Nantucket, Indy Shorts, and SCAD Savannah.

As we bring together four Oscar-qualified shorts for a collective awards campaign, ‘Freeman Vines’ is a soul-stirring cornerstone of that slate. We’re thrilled to welcome Billy Porter to the team as we introduce this film to wider audiences.”
