In a stunning fusion of rock and opera, Billy Corgan collaborated with the Lyric Opera of Chicago to present a remarkable concert series titled A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness. This event, which premiered at the Civic Opera House in Chicago, features a creative reimagining of tracks from the Smashing Pumpkins’ celebrated third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, marking its 30th anniversary. Fans were treated to dynamic performances of iconic hits, including the unforgettable “Tonight, Tonight” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.”
On the opening night, the audience was captivated by performances of “Tonight, Tonight,” “1979,” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” Corgan, accompanied by the Lyric Opera Orchestra and chorus, took the stage with his guitar, delivering passionate renditions. Joining him as lead vocalists were soprano Sydney Mancasola, mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams, tenor Dominick Chenes, and baritone Edward Parks. The ensemble was skillfully conducted by James Lowe, who collaborated with Corgan to develop new arrangements and orchestrations specifically for this unique series.
Fan-filmed footage captured the electric atmosphere as Corgan led “Tonight, Tonight,” buoyed by the harmonious support of Mancasola, Reams, Chenes, and Parks. The powerful presence of the Lyric Opera Orchestra and chorus elevated the performance, creating an unforgettable musical experience.
One particularly striking clip from the night showcased the intense build-up to the iconic line, “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage,” from “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Corgan expressed his enthusiasm: “It is thrilling to collaborate with Lyric head John Mangum, my musical partner James Lowe, and all of the artists at Lyric in reimagining this very special and historic album, and to discover how Lyric’s full operatic treatment is helping me experience my own compositions in powerful new ways.” He emphasized the blend of storytelling found in both opera and rock, calling the project a chance to honor both traditions in a majestic fashion.
The A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness concert series continues tonight and will also run from November 25-26 and November 28-30, offering more opportunities for both rock and opera enthusiasts to experience this extraordinary musical fusion.
