Behind-the-Scenes Magic: 9 Untold Secrets from Wicked's TV Night

When it comes to theater spectacles, few rival the enchantment of “Wicked.” The recent special, “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” offered fans a bewitching journey at the Dolby Theatre. Yet, some of the most captivating moments took place behind the scenes, away from the TV cameras. From multiple takes of the iconic “Defying Gravity” to delightful surprises that never aired, this article explores the hidden magic that occurred on that memorable night.

The much-anticipated taping at the Dolby Theatre on Sept. 24 was a dream come true for the “Wicked” aficionados in attendance. The passionate crowd, dressed to impress, eagerly soaked in every moment of this spellbinding event.

While the broadcast captured many unforgettable performances, including a duet of “Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy” by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, several enchanting behind-the-scenes events remained unseen by the TV audience.

Below are some intriguing moments that were left on the cutting room floor:

Audience Participation

Before the cameras started rolling, the audience had the chance to step into the show’s magic. Those seated in the orchestra section learned choreography for “No One Mourns the Wicked.” Armed with faux tulips, they practiced tossing them at the right moment during Grande’s entrance as Glinda, culminating in a final run-through before filming commenced.

The Show Must Go On

The taping proceeded out of sequence, capturing full musical numbers and transitions. While most songs required only one take, some, like “The Wizard and I” and “Defying Gravity,” needed a second performance for a perfect capture, much to the audience’s delight. Grande and Erivo’s duet also received an encore simply because the performers wanted to revel in the moment once more.

Multiple Choice Moments

To ensure a flawless broadcast, the production also filmed alternate intros for various segments. In one session, director Jon M. Chu shot two introductions: one for a comedy segment featuring unseen audition tapes and another that teased exclusive new clips. Only the audition reels made it to air, leaving the extra content unseen.

The Tease… Without the Payoff

Throughout the evening, the cast teased fresh film clips and musical snippets, though the live audience didn’t get to see them. Grande and Erivo humorously apologized for the missing previews, while Bowen Yang and Ethan Slater’s teases also remained unfulfilled, garnering playful groans from the crowd.

The broadcast did, however, delight fans with a “Wicked” reunion featuring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, accompanied by Stephen Schwartz on piano.

The Emcee

Emcee duties were in the capable hands of Bill Sindelar, who kept the crowd engaged between takes. He mingled with attendees, highlighted standout costumes, and facilitated the taping of audience reactions.

Fun Between Scenes

During the four-hour taping, breaks between scenes were filled with music to keep spirits high. Tracks like Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” and Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” sparked sing-alongs and dance sessions. Grande even made a surprise appearance during a break, sharing laughs with the audience.

Marissa’s Moment

Marissa Bode, portraying Nessarose, introduced “Defying Gravity” with an inspiring speech about authenticity. While her full introduction didn’t make the broadcast, her heartfelt words received an enthusiastic live response.

‘Popular’

In a delightful twist, Ariana Grande selected a young audience member, Remington, to join her for “Popular.” Dressed as Elphaba, the four-year-old boy was an unexpected co-star, leaving the audience charmed.

Choreographer Christopher Scott shared that he rehearsed with Grande, portraying the child himself, celebrating every moment it all came together during the live taping.

‘Dancing Through Life’

Despite efforts, Jonathan Bailey couldn’t participate in the taping, leading to creative solutions. Bowen Yang stepped in as Fiyero, offering fans a fresh perspective. The number shone with new interpretations and innovative flair, giving audiences a unique experience.

The evening was a blend of magic, music, and behind-the-scenes joy—a testament to the enduring charm of “Wicked.”
