In an era where the power of film and television can shape societal norms and inspire change, America Ferrera’s message resonates deeply within Hollywood. At the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Latino Cinema & Television, she emphasized the importance of courage in the industry, urging Hollywood to be as brave as the characters we see on screen. Her call to action pushes artists to harness storytelling as a force for empowerment and empathy.
During the Critics Choice Association’s 5th annual event, America Ferrera, honored with the Trailblazer Award, highlighted the critical role that Hollywood plays amidst rising political tensions. She appealed to fellow artists to use storytelling to build connections and foster understanding in a world where traditional discourse is failing.
The “Barbie” star shared insights from a discussion with an authoritarianism scholar, noting, “We [in Hollywood] are not a cute little side note to civil society — we are civil society. Artists and the stories we tell have a role to play in this moment.” Her remarks underscore the impact of creative narratives in shaping the cultural and political landscape.
The ceremony, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, occurred against the backdrop of political unrest, notably the ICE raids under the previous administration. These actions instilled fear across immigrant communities, affecting their daily lives, regardless of legal status.
Ferrera, awarded by Jamie Lee Curtis, continued her powerful address by stating, “We have an obligation to point not only to what we are against, but to create and to demonstrate the world that we are for.” She emphasized the inherent dignity within every individual, challenging stereotypes that reduce people to mere charity cases.
Concluding her speech, Ferrera passionately urged the industry to embrace the courage of the characters they portray. “It is time for us to find our courage, find our heroism, be as brave as the characters we write and as brave as the characters we play,” Ferrera declared, inspiring artists to create transformative art.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, other honorees included notable figures like Andy Garcia, Oscar Isaac, and Anthony Ramos. Each recognition served as a testament to the vibrant tapestry of talent and voice within the community.
