AI Ethics and Revamped Classic Song Dazzle Today's Audience

In a groundbreaking fusion of classic cinema and cutting-edge technology, “The Wizard of Oz” is set to enchant modern audiences at The Sphere. This unique presentation promises to be a sensory spectacle, integrating ethical AI and a rerecorded version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to create an immersive experience like no other. The Las Vegas entertainment hub’s massive, 160,000-square-foot screen will showcase the classic film in a way that pushes the boundaries of visual storytelling.

Sphere is preparing to take audiences on a journey over the rainbow, offering a fresh interpretation of “The Wizard of Oz” that elevates the cinematic experience. With its expansive screen, the venue provides an ideal canvas for this digitally enhanced adaptation, taking viewers down the yellow brick road with an unprecedented level of detail and immersion.

“It’s pushing the visual medium,” says Jane Rosenthal, a producer of the new film. “It’s pushing the exhibition of shows and concerts in a way that’s singular, and it’s exhilarating.”

Reimagining a Classic

The project has not been without controversy. Cinephiles have debated the merits of altering a beloved classic, especially given the addition of new characters and scenes to fit the Sphere’s dynamic stage. To achieve this, the creative team delved into archives from the Academy and Warner Bros., using original shot lists, sketches, and notebooks from the 1939 film as inspiration to ensure authenticity.

“Some of the things we did were just organic and authentic to what the original filmmaker’s intent was,” explains Jennifer Koester, president and COO of Sphere.

Ethical AI and Modern Technology

The use of AI has been a focal point in this adaptation, sparking dialogue about technological advancements in Hollywood. Rosenthal dismisses concerns, likening AI to CGI: “Anyone who is talking about this hasn’t seen it, so you’ve got the blind talking to the blind, and they’re upset about AI.”

With ethical AI models trained on original “The Wizard of Oz” footage, the Sphere team emphasizes a respectful approach, ensuring all elements are used with permission from rights holders. This technological prowess enables immersive experiences, such as simulating a tornado with wind machines and utilizing the venue’s 167,000 speakers for dynamic soundscapes.

A Sensory Experience

The goal is to engage audiences actively rather than have them passively watch, according to Carolyn Blackwood, head of Sphere Studios. The rerecording of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was meticulously crafted with an orchestra on the MGM lot, preserving Dorothy’s iconic voice while bringing it to the forefront.

“It’s still her voice, but you’re hearing it pure,” Rosenthal states. This meticulous attention to detail aims to captivate both longtime fans and new viewers, presenting “The Wizard of Oz” in a compelling format that underscores the timelessness of its story.

The Sphere’s presentation hopes to introduce the tale of a Kansas girl discovering the value of home to an entirely new audience. “For people that haven’t seen it before, this is going to totally blow them away,” Koester asserts.
