Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom is now home to a groundbreaking attraction, “Zootopia: Better Zoogether.” This new immersive show highlights the enchanting world of Zootopia through an innovative nine-minute experience. The project represents a full-circle moment for directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard, who have been instrumental in bringing this unique spectacle to life. Starting over three years ago, Bush and Howard envisioned a show that beautifully blends storytelling and technology in the heart of Animal Kingdom.
A Journey Back to Zootopia
The debut of “Zootopia: Better Zoogether” at Animal Kingdom marks a significant moment in the journey of directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard. The creative duo previously worked on the original “Zootopia” and returned to the drawing board with fresh perspectives for this new experience. “We began our journey on the first ‘Zootopia,’” recalls Bush. He notes that the research for the original film, which included spending considerable time with the park’s animals, laid the groundwork for the immersive show. Byron Howard adds, “Collaborating with Walt Disney Imagineers was a great primer as we prepared for ‘Zootopia 2.’”
An Immersive Experience
The show features astonishing elements such as spitting walruses, an ice-skating spectacle, and a captivating mouse drone performance, all brought to life through 3D technology and 4D effects. The combination of sights, sounds, and even smells pulls the audience into the heart of Zootopia’s biomes. Chris Beatty, Creative Portfolio Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, emphasizes the importance of storytelling in the show. “We have to be very clear about the story we want to tell,” Beatty explains, highlighting the challenge of conveying a compelling narrative in a short time span.
Expanding the World of Zootopia
The introduction of “Marsh Market,” a new aquatic environment developed for “Zootopia 2,” exemplifies the innovative vision behind the show. Beatty shares, “We’re using water — not just 3D animation — to enhance the audience experience.” These synchronized effects contribute to a truly engaging show that captures the essence of Zootopia’s interconnected biomes.
The Return of Beloved Characters
While the show brings new elements, fans will be delighted to see familiar faces, including Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. The focal point, however, is Officer Clawhauser, voiced by Nate Torrence. Described by Howard as “our lucky charm,” Clawhauser adds a touch of humor and charm that resonates with audiences. His whimsical antics make him the perfect character to anchor this innovative show.
As “Zootopia 2” gears up for its nationwide release on Nov. 26, “Zootopia: Better Zoogether” at Animal Kingdom offers fans a chance to engage with the beloved world in an entirely new way. This collaboration between seasoned filmmakers and Disney Imagineers creates a magical experience that is both a tribute to the original film and a glimpse into its future.
