ZFF's Christian Jungen on Festival Network and Strategic Buyout

The 21st edition of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) heralds a new era under the leadership of Christian Jungen. Following a significant management buyout, Jungen and his team are poised to secure the festival’s burgeoning role in Zurich through innovative funding strategies, political navigation, and the creation of a robust festival network. This new chapter aims to position ZFF as a leading force in the European film festival circuit.

Management Buyout: A Strategic Shift

Earlier this year, the renowned Swiss newspaper group NZZ transferred ownership of the ZFF to director Christian Jungen and an investment team comprising key figures such as ZFF vice director Reta Guetg, entrepreneur Max Loong, former ZFF president Felix E. Müller, and finance expert Marek Skreta. This management buyout represents a strategic shift aimed at fostering the festival’s independence and growth.

Jungen emphasizes the importance of local leadership, stating, “It’s very important that the festival is run by people who are on the ground.” This approach has been met with enthusiasm from private investors who are now more inclined to support an independently managed festival.

Navigating Political and Economic Landscapes

Political considerations significantly influenced NZZ’s decision to divest from the festival. Jungen explains that the newspaper’s strong conservative stance was at odds with the need for the festival to remain politically neutral and inclusive. This independence now allows the ZFF to attract diverse support, particularly from public institutions and new private partners.

The festival’s main sponsors include Swiss bank UBS and German automaker Mercedes Benz. Despite this eminent backing, government contributions remain modest, as Jungen highlights the need for increased support from the city of Zurich. “We have the name of Zurich in our title,” he points out, stressing the importance of the festival’s image to the city.

Securing Funding and Building Networks

Jungen’s strategy includes expanding partnerships with both domestic and international players. By tapping into the enthusiasm of private sponsors and optimizing contributions from foundations, the ZFF aims to enhance its financial sustainability. Jungen notes, “Being independent makes it easier to get private sponsors as well as contributions from foundations and rich individuals who love the entrepreneurial spirit.”

Looking to the future, Jungen is also exploring alliances with international festivals. By creating a strong festival network, the ZFF can leverage global sponsorship opportunities. He compares this strategy to partnerships seen in professional sports, which could significantly bolster the festival’s reach and influence.

The Road Ahead

Under the dynamic leadership of Christian Jungen, the Zurich Film Festival is set to thrive with a new management buyout, strategic political positioning, innovative funding strategies, and the creation of a festival network. These efforts promise to elevate the ZFF’s status on the global stage, ensuring its continued success and impact in the film industry.
