Zakk Wylde's Heartfelt Farewell Note to Ozzy Osbourne

In a poignant revelation, Zakk Wylde recently shared the final message he received from Ozzy Osbourne, “Thanks for everything,” before the legendary Black Sabbath frontman passed away on July 22. Wylde, who has maintained a long and storied partnership with Osbourne, opened up about their last performance together and the deep bond they shared. This article explores those final moments and reflects on the impact Ozzy had on Wylde’s life and career.

A Heartfelt Performance

During their last show, titled Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning, Zakk Wylde was acutely aware of Osbourne’s vocal challenges. Speaking to Guitar World, he recounted the amusing yet stressful experience while performing “Mama, I’m Coming Home.” “With ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home,’ when we got the acoustic out, I had to be like, ‘Keep the guitar away from the microphone so I can sing,’” Wylde explained. Amid the pressures of the moment, he took extra care to ensure he was positioned close enough to the microphone to support Ozzy’s vocals. “I was like three feet away from the microphone when I started playing the song,” Wylde noted, highlighting the comedic aspect of the situation: “It was like juggling balls or chainsaws while being on a skateboard. It was actually pretty funny… It’s supposed to be the most important show ever, but everything’s on the fly!”

Final Moments Backstage

Though Zakk Wylde hoped to reconnect with Osbourne backstage after the performance, the chaos of the event made it challenging. “Everybody and their mother were in the backstage dressing room,” he recalled, noting his desire to give Ozzy some space to recuperate. “I figured we’d see him later on – the next day or whatever. But no. The last text I got from Oz was saying, ‘Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn’t see you.’ He goes, ‘Thanks for everything.’ It was just us talking, saying, ‘I love you, buddy.’ That was it.” This simple yet profound exchange encapsulated the deep respect and affection they held for each other.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Zakk Wylde’s relationship with Ozzy Osbourne dates back to 1987, and he expressed immense gratitude for the experiences they shared. He remarked that Ozzy “gave me purpose to be a musician. And without a doubt, that’ll always be with me.” Wylde also emphasized Ozzy’s philanthropic efforts throughout his career, acknowledging the significant impact Osbourne had on countless lives. “[T]o go out with what’s the biggest-grossing charity event of all? That’s unbelievable. He helped a whole lot of people instead of making a profit. My God, what an incredible master. What an incredible life,” Wylde concluded, underscoring the remarkable legacy that Ozzy Osbourne leaves behind.

Ozzy Osbourne’s Funeral Procession

As a testament to his enduring influence, Ozzy’s funeral procession was led by his wife and children through his childhood hometown, marking the end of an era while celebrating a life well-lived. The outpouring of love and reverence for the rock icon continues to highlight the extraordinary impact he had not only on music but also on those who were fortunate enough to know him.
