Speaking ahead of the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Lanthimos underscores a pressing narrative—humanity’s impending reckoning. Yorgos Lanthimos makes a celebrated return to the Venice Film Festival with Bugonia, after previously winning the Golden Lion for Poor Things, which later garnered four Academy Awards.
This new project, produced by Focus Features, includes his frequent collaborator Emma Stone, who describes their work as “really fascinating and moving, funny and messed up, and alive.” This portrayal resonates with Lanthimos fans, known for his shift from comedic to disturbing narratives within a single film.
Inspiration and Fresh Perspective
Bugonia draws inspiration from the 2003 Korean sci-fi film Save The Green Planet! by director Jang Joon-hwan. Screenwriter Will Tracy reinvented the story, capturing Lanthimos’s interest three years ago. Emma Stone plays a high-powered CEO kidnapped by conspiracy theorists convinced she’s an alien aiming to destroy Earth. Originally conceived by Ari Aster and producer Lars Knudsen, this marks one of the first times Lanthimos directed a project he hadn’t initiated himself.
Despite being rooted in material over two decades old, Lanthimos perceives the film’s themes as strikingly relevant today. “I was immediately blown away,” he remarked upon reading the script. “It felt relevant then, three years ago, and even more relevant now, unfortunately.”
A Reflection of Real-World Dystopia
During the press conference, Lanthimos didn’t hold back regarding the film’s dystopian elements mirroring reality. “A lot of it reflects the real world,” he stated. He challenged the notion of dystopia being futuristic, emphasizing that these issues are current. “Humanity is facing a reckoning very soon,” he warned, citing concerns about technology, AI, wars, climate change, and our collective desensitization.
His comments highlight the urgency needed to address these crises, hoping Bugonia prompts viewers to contemplate the pressing situations worldwide.
Jesse Plemons on Challenging Roles
Jesse Plemons, who plays one of the film’s kidnappers and reunites with Lanthimos after Kinds of Kindness, shared his thoughts on tackling complex characters. “It’s about examining difficult things,” he explained. “There’s a risk in writing them off as being non-human, because they are and they exist.” Plemons emphasizes the importance of storytelling in understanding and confronting uncomfortable truths.
Bugonia, debuting tonight at Sala Grande, is among the most eagerly awaited films at the Venice Film Festival, running from August 27 to September 6.
