Willem Dafoe's Captivating Role as a Billionaire Megalomaniac Revealed

Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of a megalomaniac, self-made billionaire in “The Birthday Party” offers a compelling exploration of power, wealth, and family dynamics. Premiering at the Locarno Film Festival, the film captures Dafoe as he delves into the complex character of a Greek shipping magnate, deftly balancing charm and ruthlessness. This exclusive feature takes an in-depth look at his captivating performance and the film’s thematic richness.

Willem Dafoe’s Unexpected Role

Renowned for his versatility, Willem Dafoe nevertheless found himself surprised at being cast as a Greek playboy billionaire. Reflecting on his latest endeavor, Dafoe humorously remarked, “Me? Playing a Greek shipping tycoon? I don’t think so.” Despite initial doubts, he embraces the role in “The Birthday Party,” portraying a character inspired by iconic figures such as Aristotle Onassis.

The film, adapted from Panos Karnezis’ novel, is directed by Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jimenéz and showcases Dafoe as Marcos Timoleon. The narrative unfolds over 24 hours on a private island, where Timoleon plans an extravagant birthday party for his daughter, encounter various intrigues from his entourage.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

“The Birthday Party” features a prestigious cast, including Emma Suárez, Joe Cole, and Danish talent Vic Carmen Sonne. Sonne plays Sofia, the tycoon’s daughter, whose relationship with her father drives much of the story’s tension. The film captures the chaos and intensity of the celebration, set against the lush backdrop of 1970s opulence.

The star-studded ensemble is complemented by a tight, engaging script. As Dafoe’s character navigates complex family dynamics and hidden agendas, his counterpart, portrayed by Suárez, reveals layers of vulnerability and ambition. “Olivia knows him — she sees him. She can feel his vulnerability, and she wants to save him,” Suárez explains of her role.

Director’s Vision and Thematic Depth

Director Miguel Ángel Jimenéz found the distance from his own life to the world of indulgence portrayed in the film both challenging and fascinating. He aimed to humanize the characters without caricature. “To portray Marcos Timoleon with all his charm and cruelty… that, for me, was the core of the project,” Jimenéz shared.

The movie intricately examines themes of power, corruption, and familial bonds, reflecting on the destructive potential of unchecked ambition. “The film talks about power. Corruption. The self. The family. The vulnerability, too,” emphasizes Suárez, highlighting the narrative’s deeper messages.

A Cinematic Peak Behind the Curtain

Shot on the Greek island of Corfu, the film visually encapsulates the allure and excess of Timoleon’s world. Joe Cole, who portrays a journalist in the story, describes it as a chance to “peek behind the curtain” of a chaotic and affluent family.

As Dafoe points out, “The Birthday Party” resonates with contemporary audiences, creating a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of excess. “People build things that, if they aren’t careful…create a nightmare,” he notes, underscoring the film’s relevance in today’s era of wealth and influence.
