Why ‘Blade’ Was Delayed: Mahershala Ali’s Unique Vision Revealed

Marvel fans eagerly awaiting Mahershala Ali‘s debut as the iconic vampire hunter in “Blade” might find solace in understanding the reasons behind its delays. Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind Marvel Studios, recently shed light on the postponements, ensuring fans that Ali remains committed to the project. The primary focus, according to Feige, is not merely about dressing Ali in a leather outfit to have him start killing vampires. Instead, the studio aims to create something distinct and meaningful, maintaining the integrity of Marvel’s esteemed storytelling.

A Collaborative Friendship and Strategic Delays

Kevin Feige confirmed Mahershala Ali’s continued attachment to the “Blade” project, highlighting the film’s dedication to quality rather than haste. The journey to bring Blade back to life has seen unexpected twists, including a playful exchange with filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Feige humorously recalled, “Ryan Coogler called and said, ‘We’d love some costumes for ‘Sinners,’” referencing an earlier “Blade” concept that was eventually set aside. By prioritizing Ali’s portrayal as unique, Feige emphasizes the project’s need to stand apart from its predecessors.

The Challenges of Over-Expansion

Feige candidly addressed the issues stemming from Marvel’s rapid expansion, which escalated following Disney’s streaming service launch. The urgency to produce more content occasionally overshadowed the studio’s commitment to quality. Describing this period, Feige remarked, “For the very first time ever, quantity trumped quality,” echoing sentiments shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger. This realization prompted Marvel to reassess its projects, with “Blade” being one of the films affected by this reflection.

Striving for Excellence

Entering production in 2022 was the initial plan for “Blade,” but creative challenges led to further delays. Directors came and went, with Yann Demange being the latest to exit. Despite these setbacks, Ali remains enthusiastic about the role, stating at a recent event, “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.” The script has undergone several revisions, evolving from historical settings to a modern-day narrative. Feige remains hopeful about finding the right direction for the film, aiming for it to be “insanely great.”

Moving Forward with Vision

The decision to announce “Blade” at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 is a moment Feige reflects on with mixed emotions. While the journey has faced unprecedented curveballs, including industry-wide disruptions like the pandemic, Feige remains unfazed. He points to challenges such as the passing of colleagues and evolving storylines as part of the industry’s dynamic nature. Despite these hurdles, the commitment to delivering an exceptional “Blade” film remains steadfast, aiming to captivate audiences with a fresh take on this legendary vampire slayer.
